The Stormkeepers

Structure

In its current iteration, the Stormkeepers have only a few notable positions:
  • High Ardent: The position of highest authority within the sect of The Stormlord. Currently held by Thanadin Stormblessed.
  • Champion of the Storm: An honorary title given to the reigning champion of the Crucible. In times past, this person would become a leader for the holy paladins of Kord, but the order hasn't existed for several centuries and the title has become ceremonial only.
  • Stormkeepers: Stormkeepers are the more senior members of the sect. They have proven themselves in their devotion and ability, and are entrusted with the sacred task of heading into plainstorms to retrieve Stormshards.
  • Acolytes: Acolytes are the lowest members of the sect and are primarily tasked with maintaing the temple and collecting tithes.

Key Characters

Thanadin Stormblessed: See article
Dinae: A high ranking stormkeeper and one of the best at finding and harvesting stormshards. She is compeltely unaware of Thanadin's misdeeds and has nothing but respect for the seemingly benevolent man.
Braga: The reigning champion of the crucible and Thanadins personal bodyguard. He is a brute, unintelligent and cruel, but is also very aware of what is happening with the stormshards as he is often there for the deliveries.

Public Agenda

The Stormkeepers maintain a significant amount of influence throughout Icewind Dale, especially as they calculate and predict when plainstorms will strike. Their public goal is to provide worship to The Stormlord, thereby pleasing him and bringing prosperity to those within his domain. A large part of this involves acolytes travelling to the mainy villages and hamlets that dot the region and providing sermon, as well as helping worshippers follow their most rightous path.

A key tenet of the Stormkeepers faith is that one must show strength in anything they do. In many cases this translates well with warriors and soldiers, and so many members of The Shields follow The Stormlord. However, acolytes will remind those that do not fight that they can also gain favour from Kord by showing strength in their own ways, be that tilling a difficult field, hunting dangerous prey, or traversing dangerous wilderlands.

The stormkeepers also control the collection and distribution of Stormshards. With the advent of new technological breakthoughs, this strange material has become incredibly valuable. As a result, the stormkeepers have become increasingly wealthy and influential, and there are whispers that corruption is becoming rife.

Secrets

Show spoiler
Thanadin Stormblessed has become drunk on the money and power the Stormshards have afforded him. Everyday he strays further from the true tenets of his faith.

Recently, he has begun discreetly supplying a notorious gang with shard dust for the production of Suude. While highly illegal, the venture is also incredibly profitable, and benefits Thanadin personally, ratehr than the church. His champion, Braga is another benefactor of this trade, as Thanadin supplies him with Suude which makes him almost unbeatable in the Crucible.
