Boscom Naval Base, Stanley

Purpose / Function

The Boscom Naval Base in Stanley is of course the headquarters of the naval forces for the area but as Boscom is not a waring state at the moment, the base is more concerned with its other purposes.       Firstly, the base takes on the duties of the Stanley lock's tollbooth and customs department. The navy are tasked with keeping ledgers of all the ships, crew, and cargo passing through the lock, collecting tolls accordingly and dealing with any issues may arise from this.       The second purpose of the base is as home to the cities court, jail, and gallows.  Any prisoners sentenced to death in Stanley are hanged on the docks of the base, a dreary sight to pass as you bored your ship. These executions are one of the only times the folks of South Stanley venture north through Shadetree, gathering on Tucker's Landing with binoculars and scopes to watch the hanging across the canal though some people will go out from the landing in dinghies. The most elite will be allowed to cross the raising bridge to stand on the naval base docks for these occasions.      The prison naval base is the largest prison in Boscom though it is not terribly large. Boscom generally houses its prisoners in the naval base only as a transitory measure. Prisoners who hold a death sentence are not kept long and those with longer sentences but who do not qualify for a noose are sent abroad to the Maleine Prison in New Vandelle. The Maleine is one of the largest prisons in the world and are happy to accept more prisoners to labour for the kingdom of Aulette.

Architecture

The base consists of a number of docks, small buildings, and one large structure built into the side of a cliff. The smaller buildings near the docks mostly house various tools and equipment for servicing the various vessels or living spaces for the officers. The main structure that claws at the cliffside is where the prison cells, toll vaults, and other high security interests are housed. The top of the cliff seats a rotunda known as the nest from which the goings on of the lock and most of Stanley may be observed through a number of powerful scopes. A large war room, largely underused, is also found in the cliffside structure. In the war room are some of the most accurate maps in Waihohn as well as a plethora of information on the weaknesses of the world's cities and in particular ports. Information that has not been used but would be crucial if Boscom ever found itself in wartime.
