Xzeniyah

Ms Xzeniyah Hawke (a.k.a. Xzen)

Xzeniyah's earliest memory was the touch of warm lips just above her eyes, a faint scent of apples and the soft click of a closing door. It was also the only memory she associated with her mother. She grew up in an Army Base in the outskirts of Sydney. Her father was in the Engineering Corps. She and her twin brother Xzennon spent their childhood in the base's daycare and their neighbour's house. Her father's best friend, Uncle Harry, lived next door and Aunty Joan was their babysitter and surrogate mother.   Uncle Harry is now a high ranking General in Australian Army and their father, the Base Commander. Xzen still considers the base home and regularly runs the obstacle/training courses there for fun. (When they aren't being used to train new recruits of course.)   Everyone expected Xzen to enlist in the Army after she got her Engineering Degree and follow in her father's footsteps. However, when she got a job offer during her last year of Uni from the CSIRO, her father was the first to encourage her to accept it. He wanted her to have a civilian perspective on Tech that the Army wouldn't be able to give her. He wanted her to have options.   "You can always enlist later if you decide you hate being a civilian engineer. Imagine all the new tech you can build for those cutting edge scientists in that think-tank," he told her. She took his advise and went to work for the CSIRO.   Civilian life didn't suit Xzen very well. She missed the regimentation of the base, of knowing at a glance who belonged in what division and what their ranks were. But these were minor issues and she persevered. She ran every morning before work, through parks, malls and carparks looking for interesting and challenging urban routes as a wake up routine. The work itself was interesting and mundane at the same time. When she was tested and offered the special training course with Orgotek, she jumped at the chance to expand her horizons. All her colleagues expected her migrate to America because of the transfer package offered after the training, but she came home to fulfil her contractual employment obligations with the CSIRO instead. She was changed in ways they couldn't put their fingers on, above and beyond the obvious.   No one was surprised when she left as soon as her contract was up.   Everyone was surprised when she moved to the moon.   Nobody expected her twin to go with her, but he did.
