The Story of Tongues

Long ago, before our gods locked themselves away from us, they lived on the same planets of those they affected.   It was a time of great knowledge as there was only one tongue to speak.   But one day, Yqteus, the trickster god, was peering down upon his subjects to find a beautiful man name Horacio praying in his temple.   Well knowing that it was banned for Gods to love mortals, Yqteus transformed into a crane to fly down to Horacio.   The crane Brought gifts and flattery to him and it swayed Horacio into care then to love for this beautiful creature.   After a time of this wooing, Yqteus bedded Horacio in secret with only a squirrel in the window to see.   Once Yqteus left the room, he transformed back to his self without care as he did not see that little squirrel notice him.   As Yqteus disappears to his domain, the squirrel quickly bounded to the temple of the gods.   With only one tongue, the furry reporter was able to tell the other Gods what had transpired.   Furious with Yqteus, the other Gods forbade him from pleasure and struck down Horacio for his part in the heresy.   Yqteus was devastated to find his lover murdered. Gripping his body he searched for that little squirrel.   Angered by such a small creature being able to punish him so, he started to kill it, but being the trickster he was, decided on a better way to punish all mortals and the gods.   So he climbed to the tallest mountain in the land and cast out a curse to all mortals, confusing their tongues into different languages.   Chaos gripped the land as he stood on the mountain laughing at his evil trick.   Legend has it that the squirrel still lives speaking a tongue all its own, and will forever live without ever being understood again.
