Though my powers have waned and I can no longer provide wishes to those who may seek it, to quench the greed of man where it burns bright, I can still yet advise those who have helped me in my gravest hour.
Housed within this book is everything I know of the legendary wish magic. If you ever find yourselves capable of wielding such a powerful spell, this may be useful to you.
I, myself, was but a vessel for those who dared use the magic to cast it themselves. Whatever they wished for would be out of my hands, and in the control of the spell itself.
I will begin here.
1. Fate works in mysterious ways, and attempting to bend it can be an incredibly dangerous thing. If done wrong, this can lead to ill effects for generations upon generations. When casting the spell, you must be as specific as you can. Provide every detail of what you wish to occur, there is never enough context that can be given.
2. The smaller the change made to fate, the better. Something such as wishing for "one hundred gold pieces" is much better than wishing to be the ruler of a large kingdom. The larger the wish is, the higher the possibility there is that something can go wrong. Thus, the larger the wish, the more details will be required when using the spell.
3. For mortals, casting the spell is a dangerous endeavor even if everything is sorted out perfectly. Being such a powerful spell, the amount of magic energy used in the process is more than most mortal bodies can handle. If the wielder is unlucky, this can lead to a terminal spellcasting impairment. The one who uses wish magic must also be naturally fortunate, or very hardy.
Now I shall list a few of the wishes I've granted to greedy mortals, in the hopes that you may not follow the same mistakes they have.
1. They wished for an unlimited amount of gold. At that, the floor had to be reconstructed, much to the annoyance of Master Hervestus. Because of their greed, they did not see it, but unlimited is always too much.
2. They wished to be a powerful ruler, and so they were turned into a measuring stick with a grand enchantment of some kind. In their hastiness to become an emperor or king, they failed to realize the logic in their wording.
3. They wished to be able to see wherever treasure was hidden, but their vision was blinded by a constant light. Though they considered treasure to be gems and gold, even simple food is treasure to some.
In truth, the most likely of wishes to succeed are the ones done not out of greed, but for the sake of another, or many others.
Long ago, a young boy wandered into the floor, clearly starved and barely hanging onto life. Yet, when he came upon my room and was offered a wish, he didn't ask for a grand feast or a well of water. The boy looked at me earnestly and pleaded for his people to be saved from their endless cycle of violence.
Even the faulty wish magic would not deny him that.
My existence was to punish mortals who would seek a quick path towards greed. I gladly lived for that purpose. To have my abilities taken away from me was as if my purpose was ripped away from me.
To you few who have convinced me that I no longer need bear the burden, that I may rest now. I thank you, and leave you with this.
May fortune find you well, and your paths go by easy.
