They can eat anything, but mostly flesh. It doesn't need to protect its food because they don't store it, eating it or feeding it to the many terrible beasts they keep for war.

History

When the island was discovered, the elphs had gone ino hiding. Years later, whilst mining for iron, a man found them hiding, and they repopulated the island.
