Wayward Roost

Wayward Roost is a settlement that has sprung up around the most-used anchor point for travel between Detritus and other planes. The anchor point was hotly-contested territory for many years, a rich opportunity for anyone who controlled it to levy taxes on travellers, get their pick of trade or even take prisoners and slaves from those who travelled to Detritus. Many people who came to the plane were refugees or criminals who had nowhere else to go, and thus had few possessions with them to help them start a new life. The anchor point changed hands many times over the years, a bloody bit of ground with ramshackle defences that were attacked too often to support a civilian population. That was until an alliance of forward-thinking traders, fighters with a moral compass and displaced people of all kinds decided to take control. After a costly fight, they managed to take the anchor point for their own, driving out the scum who had claimed it, and set up the trading town of Wayward Roost. There were a few shaky early years where they had to defend their claim. Many doubted whether Wayward Roost would survive long enough to establish itself. Thanks to a well-timed change of heart from the Trashlord Kitt Manser, last-minute reinforcements allowed the settlers of Wayward Roost to see off the alliance of bandit leaders that had launched a last ditch attack, the Blue Coyote Five.   Now Wayward Roost has secured its place as a neutral ground not owned by any Trashlord, it has become a steadily-growing trading town. Without the scope of Overlook or the cities, it remains modest by choice. The Mayor of Wayward Roost is a position that requires careful balancing of the town's growth with its defensibility and the quality of life of its citizens. The current Half-Orc Mayor, Krabash Zo Kurr, has a nuanced grasp of the town's delicate position and has run largely unopposed for nearly fifty years. However, he is growing old and considering retirement. The main contender for his position is Nenyo D'Alcatar, an Elven merchant from a family of famous merchants who came to Detritus for the opportunity (though he doesn't talk about why he is obsessed with security and journalistic transparency, and wants to institute stronger border checks). Many fear that Nenyo will push for Wayward Roost's expansion at the expense of its safety and equality. Nenyo is gaining a strong following amongst the merchants, traders and artisans of Wayward Roost with his talk about increasing their wealth.
