The Cragslayer Clan

A dwarven clan who were once an honorable and proud political force but have become a crime syndicate. The Cragslayer clan left the material plane when a rival clan used underhanded means to oust them from their ancestral mountain fortress. They came to Detritus because they knew that their rivals would not follow them here to finish the job. However, they quickly found that their lofty ideals of honour and community were incompatible with the compromises required on a plane like Detritus. They gravitated towards the mountains behind the little settlement of Gorlincks and set up a mining camp, intending to build a new fortress as a testament to their clan's nobility, but they quickly ran into conflict with other interests. Eventually they negotiated (and 'negotiated') an area of the mountains to mine for themselves, but then, very suddenly, they ceased their deep mining operations and instead focused on quarrying stone and refining gems. Many believe that it was simply greed that got the better of the mighty dwarven family, but it is also possible that they discovered something beneath the mountain that caused them to stop. They hate discussing it, even centuries later, and will reject any attempts to start that conversation.   As Gorlincks prospered, the Cragslayer clan found that their chosen industry was extremely profitable, especially as they began to specialise in building houses in the styles of different races and cultures. The majority of the stone buildings in the city are Cragslayer workmanship. At the same time, they found that money and favours gave them access to the politics of the city, even a seat on the newly-formed City Council. And thus the noble Cragslayer clan were drawn into a world of political intrigue they had never intended to find. Some dispute that neither family will speak of left the Cragslayers at odds with another major political family, the Bounder-Chants. They found unlikely allies in the Esteria elf family, who were handling a lot of the civic organisation of the city. When the Yuan-Ti attempted to take power, the Cragslayers supplied the fine weaponry used to repel them and the strong arms to wield it. They did, however, vote in favour of allowing the Yuan-Ti Purebloods to remain in the city, led by Stheno, a decision they would come to regret.   When the City Council became a Triumvirate, they formed an uneasy alliance with the Tiefling Bounder-Chants. The clan elders had their suspicions about the Yuan-Ti's treachery leading to the corruption charges against the other Council members, but they had no way of proving it, and the Bounder-Chants were more interested in maintaining their own position. The Cragslayers' primary allies on the Council, the Esteria elves, were publicly shamed for their supposed corruption, but the Cragslayers promised they would continue to represent both families' voices, and the interests of elves as well as dwarves, on the Triumvirate. The Cragslayers were not directly involved in the events that led up to the Blood War (though they have opinions on the poor choices of the Bounder-Chants in relation to it). As soon as the head and the heir of the Bounder-Chant family were killed, Dorrok and Agate Cragslayer, the dual matriarchs of the clan, swore to bring down the dishonorable Yuan-Ti. The Esteria elves fought alongside them, but the Yuan-Ti were cunning where the Cragslayers and Esterias were straightforward, and both families lost a lot of people. The Cragslayers withdrew when they faced extinction, and the Bounder-Chants fled the city.   The Yuan-Ti rulers of the city forced the Cragslayers to swear that they would never move against the monarchy, threatening their loved ones until they gave in. Dorrok and Agate were executed and into this power vacuum stepped generations of Dwarves who had become hardened by the trials they had endured. They became the primary crime syndicate in the city, taking over the Bounder-Chants' operations with frightening ruthlessness. Now the Cragslayer clan is run by a brother and sister, Sovite and Scoria, who run the clan's operations, both above and below board, efficiently.
