Toreifal

The world of Toreifal is a scattering of magical floating islands. the lands were first raised off the ground due to the peculiar infestation of giant worms that the mages wanted to study. The islands' inhabitants are the descendants of the those first researchers that were sent up with the islands all those years ago.   Below the islands is the Sea of Fire; a massive, roiling smog that blankets the area below the islands, creating an impenetrable barrier for both the Serpent infestation and the residents of the island who may wish to leave. Anyone who falls into it never comes back. It is burning to the touch and at certain depths it can melt hardened steel. Attempts to scry into the sea using magical or mechanical means have turned up nothing but failure.   the islands consist of two main factions studying the infestation across 3 main groupings of islands:   Borte is the largest landmass consisting of a majority of the world's farmlands, and the only that is capable of growing food out of some rooms in the academy city of Elysium.   Dunland is the frontline defense against the Skyfauld incursion. it is the technology and research hub of the world with its greatest achievement being the academy city of Elysium.   Skyfauld is home to the Serpents and a gigantic dormant volcano. The laws of physics is turned on its head here, and gravity can go any which way. Smoke - rather than billowing up from the crater mouth - trickles down across the land, choking everything on the main island with endless smog and creating the ever burning toxic fog cloud that flows below the islands known as the sea of fire.
