Long ago, in time lost to time, there was an order of healers renown across the multiverse for their abilities. Such was the extent of their abilities that a few, arrogant in their power, sought to steal immortality from the realm of the gods. They invoked darker magics and wove them into their healing spells. They sought to cure death, and in so doing they created unlife. It is said that the first to be risen from the dead was an elder healer; a mage with incredible power in life. His magic, twisted and dark as the first of the unnatural undead, escaped with the knowledge of raising the dead and became the first necromancer. He laid waste to entire cities, creating an army of the undead. Each fallen enemy strengthened his power as it rose again to fight and conquer for him. At last he amassed the power to fight the gods themselves. The battle destroyed entire worlds, and the darkest of imbalances occurred. Some gods were turned to undead, and as neither mortal nor immortal they were the most terrible of evils. In the end, aided by the distant alien beings of the outer realms, the king of the undead, Necron, the mad gods warped by his magics, and his most powerful lieutenants were captured. Unable to be killed, they were sealed in a prison, bound at the nexus of all worlds. The gods gave the remaining order, who were horrified at learning of the arrogance of their peers and disgraced across all the lands, and unending task. The Order swore two oaths; one, a vow that they would seek to rid the worlds of the undead as penance for the sins of their order. Their clerics called the Heilari, still heal and give life. Their Paladins, called the Exsequiae, seek out the undead across the land and smite their unholy sickness to cleanse the world.     The Order operate openly, though their origins are lost to the passage of time. They still heal and smite, but have grown soft and lax, less the ardent wartime medics and mighty slayers that they were meant to be. Now, the Clerics act as healers and confessors, while the Paladins have transformed into Inquisitors seeking to root out heresy and necromancy. Healing magic can only be practiced by members of the order. Anyone who heals without the Order’s permission is accused of heresy and is subject to an inquisition.
