The Gallows
The Gallows are a location in Titan where criminals who are sentenced to death are executed. While it is a serious affair, it is a public event that anyone can attend. Typically, the soon to be executed is given a moment to say a prayer to their god or give their final address to the gathered crowd before they are released from this mortal coil. It is a long, painful form of execution designed to deter future criminals.
Purpose / Function
The Gallows exist solely for the execution of criminals. The death penalty is reserved for the serial murderers, guard murderers, war criminals and those guilty of treason, however the King has given the death penalty to enemies of the crown in the past.
Architecture
The structure is a concrete archway with hooks in the arch to hang rope from. The people below the archway are stood on stools and the rope is tightened. When the time is right, the victim is pushed from the stool and strangled to death.
History
The Gallows used to be a free standing structure with a dropping platform to ensure a quick death that existed in all towns in the Dominion of Bolvikik, but in 23,220, a criminal facing the death penalty in the capital escaped custody and burned the structure down. Once they were captured a second time, the King of the Dominion of Bolvikik demanded the criminal be hanged at once and this structure is what they used. Due to the barbarity of the hanging, the King believed it would deter future criminals and it was decreed that this structure was the new form of execution. The new form of execution had not been changed in over 2,000 years.
