Silvering

In a monster filled world, the creatures with the claws had the advantage. With the discovery of silvered weapons, the tides have turned.

Manufacturing

Creating a weapon of pure silver is an extremely expensive endeavor. It is much easier to give an iron weapon a silver coat. The difficulty is the balance between adding a layer of silver that won't be removed once sharpened, but not adding too much to alter the weight and balance of the weapon. Only premier smiths can accomplish this task consistently.
Access & Availability
Silvered weapons are widely available, however, it is a specialty service when done well. It is not a long procedure, so an adventurer who leaves a weapon to be silvered can expect to have their weapon back by closing time.
Complexity
Any average smith can add a silver coating to a weapon. The price is a universal 100 gold pieces. Any weapon silvered by an average smith becomes a -1 Silvered Weapon or a -2 Silvered Weapon if particularly unlucky..   If the weapon is crafted by a particularly skilled smith, such as Gond at Good Gond , the weapon can be swung without penalty. This is due to the fact that it is a precise form coat of silver added to the weapon to coat the blade, add minimal weight, yet not be removed when sharpening the blade.
Discovery
Raro the Lore Master wrote that certain monsters were discovered to be vulnerable to silvered weapons back before The End. Old tomes tell the story of a Dwarven blacksmith turned adventurer who was fighting demons and devils in a volcano when his weapons had broke. He took his coins and fashioned crude daggers made of gold, silver and copper. When attacking, he learned the silvered weapon cut through his foe's natural armour. He credited this with saving his life and returned to smithing to create special silvered weapons. Unfortunately, his name has been lost to history.
