Orcish

Geographical Distribution

Orcish is spoken around the globe by Orcs. Many adventurers have taken to learn the language to assist in negotiations with the notoriously aggressive and universally disliked Orcs. Though the dialect changes between tribes, the Orcish from one region does not truly differ than Orcish of another region.

Vocabulary

The Orcish language is a lot like those who speak it, blunt and to the point. Orcish does not contain any inherent sayings or idioms, as the Orcish language does not lend itself to speak poetically. Orcs who have mastered similes and metaphors tend to use these to impress and confuse other Orcs, who are expecting communication rather than having to think and talk. Most successful Orc chieftains speak in colourful words and try to paint vivid pictures to win over other Orcs. Coming from a non native speaker, however, may just upset Orcs who think they are being tricked.   Due to its harsh and literal meanings, the Orcish language can be translated almost word for word to the Common tongue. Translators get a bit confused when Orcs speak in simile and metaphor, however, as what Orcs believe to be great, the average person considers foul, resulting in miscommunication.

Phonetics

Orcish is an extremely harsh language. Those who are not native in Orcish tend to find their jaws and throats become sore if conversing for a while. The written Orcish language is usually spelt the way it sounds phonetically, so there it is not uncommon to have multiple spellings of the same word. The Orcish script is designed to be read aloud, so the different spelling do not make it difficult to read. Due to the easily read script, having someone write down Orcish words to be read ad a crucial moment is a viable strategy when it comes to communication.
