King's Guard of Xosutan

The King's Guard is an organization that is usually made up of the realm's greatest warriors that have sworn to spend the rest of their lives in service to protecting the King, their family, and the realm. The King's Guard are chosen from theoretically the best martial champions of the realm each member of the King's Guard is responsible for choosing their succesor, requiring that succesor to succesfully defeat them in combat before they can take their place, and that King's Guard can enter into a seperate rank of the guard. While the warriors of the King's Guard are expected to be the best of the best, sometimes corruption can enter their ranks with noble families looking to find places for their children in order to bring honor to their houses, although becoming a member of the King's Guard does demand swearing an oath that forbids all forms of inheritence. The King's Guard are also all expected to wear their signature armor, making them faceless identical figures that, despite any deeds that may perform, will bring honor to the King's Guard as a whole rather than specfic members.
The armor of the King's Guards are collectively worth all the wealth of a city, with the armor sporting enchantments that make it nigh invincible, as well as allowing those who wear it to cast a select set of spells. The weapon's of the King's Guards are a varied selection but the most popular choice are a series of ancient glaives, built at the height of The Xosutan Kingdom's power, that allow the wielder to use them as both as ranged weapons that fire bolts of metal that slice through reality, while the blade of the glaive itself is shrouded in pure magical energy that has the vorpal property.
Those of the King's Guard who are succesfully defeated in battle by their chosen successor, before the eyes of both the King and fellow King's Guard, will be given an honorable station. The King's Percipient are those King's Guard who have essentially retired, but still serve the realm by traveling to stations both within and without Xosutan where they can monitor and report on threats while undercover, but still a martially trained and capable warrior.

History

The King's Guard of Xosutan predates the formation of the Xosutan Kingdom and eventual Xosutan Empire. The original group were heroes that accopmanied the first King of Xosutan in his quest to rid the land of an evil mage. These heroes chose successors and the groups ranks were expanded, thus leading to the group of twenty King's Guard that exist at the current time.
