A Tale of Three Gods

In the beginning, the Lady of the Mountains and the Father of Waves created a world- She shaped a cradle for the children that she saw within her mind's eye, and He poured forth the waters of conflict to strengthen and temper them to protect their mother in times of strife. She wept but understood the necessity of this, and her shining tears gathered in the low places of the land and healed those who sought them so as to show that strength and kindness could go hand in hand. The cruelty of the seas are not a whim, but a test, and the Seagod challenged those who persevered to seek him out and gifted them his blood to strengthen and cut as a blade those who would harm them. Their new order caught the eye of the heavens, from which came a shining dragon. The being reveled in the balance that it found between the two and offered a gift of its own- it cast its scales into the sky and shone its light all throughout the world, bringing beauty and inspiration to all. As time wore on, the lights shone brighter and more intensely until they overwhelmed the first kingdom and its people in deadly radiance. The dragon did not mean to cause harm, but could not take back what had been done, and threw itself to the lands below to beg the mother for her mercy, growing all the brighter. The Lady was hesitant, but the Father made his displeasure known. Death without purpose displeased Him and the dragon had caused much. This brought about the first and only quarrel of the gods- the only way to restore balance was to hide the dragon away from the light and ensure its frightful radiance would not scorch the land again. The dragon crawled into a cave between the land and sea, stretched beneath the mountains and closed its eyes in acceptance- its light would hurt no one here, but the heat from its scales would melt stone and send it to the surface to make new lands for the chosen people. The dragon sleeps still- we dare not wake it, lest our homes be torn asunder, and all is cast beneath the waves. Sometimes its nightmares reach for us in the form of sickness and infirmity still, as the dragon remembers the reason for its entombment and laments.
