The Citadel
The Citadel is a large fortified government building in Everflame City, serving as both the headquarters for its City Watch and a central command for Everflame's military forces.
History
Originally a fortress operated by the Republic of Light, the Citadel was refurbished and renamed after the founding of the Baronies of Everflame. Before the creation of Lightarm, the Citadel remained mostly inoperative, used only by the local City Watch as a prison.
When Minara's Legion was created and Everflame's army formalised, the Citadel was expanded to act as a command centre for all military operations. Employing numerous conjuration and divination wizards, it enabled Everflame's military to coordinate its operations far more efficiently than any other army in the world.
During the First Arcane War, the rapid communication and information-gathering that the Citadel enabled was critical to Everflame's military campaigns, though thanks to Darhemia's support of the Litherian Empire few gains could be made. After the Treaty of Gildmire, Everflame's military and political leaders agreed that faster troop movement was necessary both to fortify the country's borders and to respond to threats from within. To facilitate this, a number of teleportation circles were created in the Citadel as well as in a number of key cities and chokepoints across the country.
600 years later, in the Darhemian War, the Citadel's coordination capabilities were extended to every member of the alliance. While its teleportation circles proved mostly useless while Everflame's troops were in enemy territory, the ability to quickly gather and relay intelligence on enemy troops and fortifications allowed the alliance's forces to defeat the technologically superior Darhemians' without excessive casualties.
While the Citadel gave Everflame an early advantage in the Second Arcane War, it was quickly sabotaged by the Litherian Empire, leaving Everflame blind and deaf during the attacks on Verdegar and Candlekeep. The teleportation circles were quickly repaired, but the deaths of the majority of Everflame's most powerful divination and conjuration wizards were not so easily fixed. To this day, the Citadel provides only a fraction of its previous communication capabilities, and is more often used to issue broad orders than to micromanage units of soldiers.
