Oretioorn Camp
While not the first settlement to be named after a mythical creature, Oretioorn Camp is certainly the one with the closest connection to its namesake. Located in the unclaimed territory of the Great Eastern Desert, the informal camp was established in 2349 ANG inside the skeletal remains of a creature named the Oretioorn by its residents.
The Oretioorn
Based on eyewitness accounts of its structure, the Oretioorn was serpentine in nature, stretching out to at least 250 metres in length. Further study has proved impossible due to the hostility of the natives, but local legends tell many conflicting stories of its origin: that it was created by one of the Old Gods as a proxy against the people of Tilen; that it was a defective Darhemian weapon; or that it was summoned from another dimension by a mad wizard, but decomposed rapidly due to Tilen's alien atmospheric conditions.
The Settlement
The settlement consists mostly of tents and crude shacks formed of bone, though there are one or two wooden buildings. Its people have had little to no contact with the outside world since the settlement's formation, and the few explorers who have been there claim that only one villager, an elderly dwarf, remembers in any detail the world outside of the settlement. The residents live a hunting-gathering lifestyle, making them Tilen's leading experts on the mysterious creatures of the desert, but they are hostile towards any outsiders who cannot prove their strength in battle. They practice a strange religion that bears some similarity to traditional Litherian worship, but with noticeable differences.
The settlement is ruled by a chief, a title generally passed down hereditarily but which can sometimes change via force or consensus. A chief rules until death or incapacitation, and is granted a home within the Oretioorn's enormous skull.
History
Due to the spotty memory of its residents, little of the settlement's history is known. At least one magic-user has pinpointed the settlement's founding at 2349 ANG, and the locals are mostly human and dwarvish, with purportedly Litherian and Everian features. The earliest records of the settlement in Esidell date back to 2513 ANG, when the elven bladesinger and explorer Luvere Trextri came across the settlement and reported it to Eastern Elven authorities. Its legal status is unresolved, but few in the Eastern Elven government are aware of it, and fewer still seem to care.
The camp has been independently discovered a number of times by explorers, including the aforementioned Luvere Trextri, but little of note has been learned from or about it, since the locals are reluctant to share their maps, techniques, or history with outsiders.
