West Marches Campaign intro

Welcome, adventurers, to a world of little hope and life. You live in an Age of Darkness. It has been over 200 years since any living soul has seen the light of the sun. Most believe that its brilliance is gone from this world forever. Among humans, its memory survives only in myth and legend. You live in the small city of Torhaven, which is, as far as anyone knows, the last surviving humanoid settlement. This last bastion of civilization exists by the power of a great sorceress who labors alone in her tower day after day to maintain the city's magical defenses.

The wilderness, you are told, is a dangerous place. Few souls are brave enough to venture outside the walls, and many who do never return. But those who have braved the darkness and lived to tell of it have left scattered notes and sketched maps documenting their exploration. They tell stories of horrifying undead creatures and other indescribable terrors. But they have also noted places where there are likely treasures to be had. History tells you that long ago, in the days when that great flaming orb still lit up the world for thousands of miles around, this land was dominated by a great civilization possessed of magic and artifice now lost. The things they left behind are waiting to be claimed by those brave enough to step out of the light.

This is a draft for a West-Marches-style campaign, which I think would be fun to run at some point in the future. It's set over 1000 years ago, during the Age of Darkness.
