Shadow Academy

The only public institution for the study of the arcane arts, the Shadow academy attracts aspiring mages from all over Gelland. Enrollment is exclusive however, and tuition costs are often high, except for students who show exceptional talent, so most students come from wealthy families.
The Academy's main draw in arcane instruction, and students are expected to have a basic arcane proficiency when they apply, the curriculum is comprehensive, and covers history, religion, medicine, and even engineering. Some students even enroll with the intent to focus their studies on one of these topics.
The school is run by a division of the Church of Shadow, and the high tuition costs go to fund church activities in addition to the school itself.

Purpose / Function

The institution was established over 500 years ago by The Church of Shadow in order to reduce the stigma on arcane magic, improve access to recorded knowledge for those the church considers responsible enough to handle it, and most importantly give the church the opportunity to shape the minds of the next generation of magicians.

Architecture

A visitor to the university could be forgiven for being underwhelmed at first glance. While the design of the various buildings is graceful, even beautiful, the architecture is somewhat minimalistic and understated. The layout and coloring of the buildings seem to almost subliminally encourage quiet and create an atmosphere of study. Many even describe the effect as tense and foreboding.
The university stands as a monument to the Lord of Shadow, and the campus is expertly designed to reflect his stoic and enigmatic nature. And true to form, the true pride of the university lies hidden. Deep beneath the main library, surrounded by a labyrinth of tunnels filled with traps, dangerous creatures, and magical defenses, sits The Archive, the greatest repository of knowledge in the known world.
