The Arts in Their Many Forms
Arts, in the broadest term, are 'the capability to harness, control, command, or influence the elements, sub-elements, and physical forms of nature.' This definition encompasses the primary sister branches of the Arts and their correlation sub-branches, each more thoroughly defined by the Class and Grade system.
Bases are the forefront of one's ability to acknowledge Arts. Bases are commonly characterized by the most general of a concept that an individual can control so that they can better guide their general education into one of productivity. They are commonly an elemental type (either Fire, Air, Water, or Earth), though cases such as Animalistic (in the case of Shifters) or Spiritual (in the case of Necromangers or Oracles) do exist, though a bit more rare.
Classes are the beginning of specifications of magical 'types'. They categorize under what type of schooling or education a person pursues.
General Classes are taught in primary school and expounded upon - if available - in secondary school, and, as noted by their name, are general and practical uses of the Arts. These are thus the most common, and are broken down as such;
- Elemental and Advanced Elemental Arts: This is a standard class in many curriculums, as it expands upon natural Bases and their cooperative Bases to improve the practicality of many students.
- Alchemical Arts: A practice that mixes traditional tools such as metals, pewter, herbs, and other such natural resources, infusing them with Arts to produce a desired outcome. This is one of the most researched Arts, and varies greatly by region. This is the second most prolific Art's Class, seconded by Elemental.
- Communicational Arts: These Arts have been recently stressed in the emerging curriculum due to the expansions of empires and the establishment of newer countries. 'Communication' has been linked to a wide range of methods, from Messengers being summoned for short-distance or lightweight mail, to Glimcing and other visual forms of communication.
- Preformed Arts: A favorite by students, Preformed Arts are more whimsical, yet noted as needed, applications of Arts. These are typically for the enjoyment of the Casters and/or an audience, and can enhance liberal arts performances (as noted by the use by the Sokolov Ballet Academy). This includes, but is not limited to, Illusionary Casting, Temporary Shifting, Projection - Vocal types, and more.
- Survival Arts: This practice is wide and variable by region, and is primarily instructed in the Outer Regions, or is taught by military instruction. Not a common curriculum subject, these Arts are taught and passed down in households or communities.
- Defensive Arts: Simular to Survival Arts, Defensive arts are not taught in the traditional setting; although similar, Defensive Arts concentrate on different aspects than Survival Arts. Defensive Arts are characterized by their more aggressive and combat nature, via defending the Caster from attacks, deflecting attacks, or other simple defensive maneuvres. Outside of military instruction, these are taught from families or small, outside schools, or learned through experience.
