Saint Bastin

Bastin was a Halfling noble who lived during the Era of Light in the Icaraxian Empire.   When he betrothed to a young noblewoman, he was given a prophecy by the oracle Ethisantrix that he would die before bearing children by the hand of the one closest to him. He desperately tried to prevent his death, seeing clergy and mages, but they all saw the prophecy as little more than a lunacy. Bastin however, knew the oracle's reputation and was determined to thwart his doom.   He went slightly mad deciphering the prophecy, but determined that his brother would be the one to kill him. He gathered a group of loyal kinsmen and marched for his brother's estate. His brother denied the accusation, but Bastin didn't listen. He struck down his brother in cold blood.   Unfortunately Bastin misinterpreted the prophecy. Upon his return, his wife drove a dagger into his heart. As he fell, she told him her plan all along to kill him to inherit his fortune, but she was worried the prophecy would interfere.   Upon his death, he was confronted by the god Eradil, who was amused by his futile attempt to thwart fate. For his determination, Eradil granted him sainthood over fate and prophecy.
