Archivist of the Chorus

After the collapse of the Uraanoyya and the Time of Greatest Imbalance, the group of nobles now known as Eternals, who had gained eternal life, fractured into a series of roles, desperate to maintain their powers, history, and culture. A few decided to, usually alone, dedicate themselves to an archive or library, and do all in their power to protect the knowledge stored within.   During the collapse, the countless souls that saturated the land, unable to leave this plane, often gravitated towards the only references of them that remained, and the only people that knew anything of their existence. The collapse was hectic for archivists, using whatever means available to them to protect and hide their archives from both the forces of wights, particularly bent on the destruction of eternals, and greeting the thousands of souls now in their care. Such a concentration of spirits makes archives enticing to the Lords of outside planes, ever seeking to spread their corruption into reality through lost souls. In this age, many archives were destroyed, or fell to the drives of Anger, Entropy, Pleasure, or Despair, now being power centres for the Lords, where the veil between planes has worn thin.   The surviving archives used a multitude of means of protection. Some were buried beneath the ground or in the sides of mountains, with the help of world engines, some were cloaked from detection by seeing veils, very few were defended successfully by pure military strength. The archivists who survived this age are forces to be reckoned with, being supreme physical manifestations of knowledge of the arcane.   The eternal one Pwueyyu is the archivist for the Halls of Eternity, which are situated on the peak of Jolung, one of the highest of the Icstan range. After installing an obscuring veil, Pwueyyu, like many archivists who had lived to this point, was now idle. The effects of prolonged isolation in an area saturated with lost souls easily takes its toll. Pwueyyu, in the following century spent trailing halls and corridors best forgotten, developed a new set of magic with the machinery available in their particularly expansive halls. They discovered, after decades of reading material for the sake of it, how to bind a lost soul to their will. The process is time consuming, and requires intricate knowledge of the soul being bound, but faced with centuries of little to do, little was lost. After being bound, it is said that a soul joins its archivist's chorus, and provides harmony to their magics.   Archivists engaged in this practice for centuries or even millenia can build up choruses of hundreds of souls. Not limited by time, archivists seek to ever increase their capacity to remember, to add to the only beings that can now keep them company.   It is not unheard of for powerful archivists to join what remains of the forces of man, and bring their chorus to campaign against the wights for revenge. Others are locked in endless conflict with the Lords for control of their archive. Some are content to simply read, and revel in the nostalgic songs of a bygone age.
