The Dethelbum

The Great Divide Mountain range is home of many dangerous creatures, but there is one that even they fear. Within the abandoned tunnels of the old cities, a ghastly creature hunts those that wander too far into the darkness. Created by the sages of Malunar, the Dethelbum was designed to hunt the heavy stout bodies of dwarves. 6 long jagged legs and hooked pads allow it to move quickly through the narrow tunnels. Its two arms have a reach of 4ft and large curved claws are able to tear shields away. Multiple eyes provide a large view range and lets in as much light as able. It's maw has a set of fangs followed by rows of sharp teeth, shredding its victims as they are eaten. of sharp teeth, shredding its victims as they are eaten. Hairs around its barbed claw like fee allow it to feel nearby movements. This chimera was perfectly made for its purpose deep within the mountain.   The Dethelbum was designed to break apart dwarven war groups and clear settlements, but as the war ended its creators soon realized what they truly released against their neighbors. It managed to evade all hunting parties the sages and dwarves sent after it. All they could find were remains of those caught in its grasp. The Dethelbum was made to feel a constant hunger, which keeps it motivated to never stop hunting until it needs to rest. It likes to burrow in loose rock or dirt. Relying on its hairs to sense approaching danger when it approaches while it sleeps. The snowy caps leave plenty of undergrounds to drink from. When times are far between victims the Dethelbum will sneak passed forts and steal a wandering villager or lost child. The beast regurgitates what is not digested, leaving behind a pile of bones, clothes, and bio matter.   Guards and fearless hunters have often heard wailing come from the old tunnels. They remain unsure if it is the Dethelbum or freshly caught victims. This old territory has been renamed the Wailings, giving warning to those that wish descend into the darkness. They wait in hopes that eventually it will die of age, but it still moves about unhindered in the mines and shafts underneath The Great Divide.

Basic Information

Anatomy

When the mages of Malunar approved the creation of chimeras for warfare, they didn't realize that some would overperform their duties such as the Dethelbum. The creators inspiration came from watching spiders in his laboratory. The idea is to create an entity that has the mobility of a spider combine with the upper torso of a human. Many prototypes were created and destroyed not meeting satisfaction.   The slender design was made to slip through narrow mountain tunnel passageways.  Its 6 legs are double jointed allowing as much mobility as needed to ambush and escape. Hooked pads on its feet give it the spider like ability to cling to ceilings and walls.   2 4ft long arms are equipped with 3 slender digit like hands along with a set of barbed talons for tearing prey apart. Insect like mandibles crush prey before being torn up by 2 rows of sharp teeth.

Genetics and Reproduction

The Dethelbum was created magically and measured were made to ensure that it could not reproduce.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The creature needs food like any other being. It can go weeks without after a hearty meal, but regular water intake is needed every so often. Food is passed through a series of stomachs that breaks down different materials, before being regurgitated.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The mound of a head has a compound eye structure, giving the Dethelbum a full range of vision, although its sight is not as crisp or clear as other options. Its vision is based on light, being able to pickup the slightest flicker source in the darkness of the mountain.    Course hair on its feet and body give it the ability to detect the slightest vibration of movement. Hunters have said that it has managed to escape any cave in traps set for it before the first stone hits the floor.     The mages were reluctant to implant any listening mechanisms into the creature. They feared that loud noises within the mines might distract or be used against it.
