Sleeping Dragon of Neverwinter

Written by nebula7693

Local legend has it that a dragon from the time before the Great Cataclysm sleeps beneath the city of Neverwinter. It is believed that the breath of this dragon contributes to the unusual warmth of the city which never experiences freezing temperatures.

Summary

In the days before the Great Cataclysm, the 13 races lived in peace. Dragons were among these races and were considered to be the greatest of philosophers, poets and writers. Their wisdom was highly valued by the other 12 races and their counsel was considered to be of the same weight as law or religious canon.   On the day of the Great Cataclysm, many Dragons were killed. However, Drag, the God of the Dragons, spared some of his creations by putting them to sleep and changing their physiology.   The last of those to be spared was Mæsal, a bronze wyrmling whose parents were killed in the days of the Great Cataclysm while trying to save Mæsal. Mæsal watched helplessly as his parents used their powerful bodies to shield him from the maelstrom of fire and rock which seemed to rain incessantly from the sky, burying the three of them alive; Mæsal safe beneath the dome their wings and bodies created above him. It was in this pocket of relative safety that Drag found him, seething and furious at the other 12 races for allowing this total destruction of the world and causing the death of his parents.   Drag tried to calm the wyrmling, but Mæsal was beyond consoling. Mæsal swore vengeance against the 12 races, swearing to kill every one of them until none survived but dragons. Drag could not dissuade the wyrmling from this course of action.   Placing five runes of sleep around the wyrmling, Drag declared he would not break those seals until the dragon's fury had abated enough for him to return to the world. Drag, in his compassion for the wyrmling, turned his dead parent's bodies into stone so they would continue to protect their child until the day he would be released.   Over the next several thousand years, the protective lair in which Mæsal slept was slowly covered by dirt forming what looked to be a simple hill. The Starmetal river eventually made its way to the ocean on the northern side of the hill. It is on this hill that the southern half of Neverwinter is built.   In his slumber, Mæsal dreams of his parents and their death. For 12 thousand years he has slumbered, his fury unassuaged.   It is the breath of this dragon that keeps the air around Neverwinter warm throughout the winter months.
