Creation

In the beginning, for there has to be a beginning if there is to be a now, it was said that the great goddess had made our universe entirely by accident. Impossible you might think to create a universe by accident. Stranger things have happened, I would say to you.   You see she had been alone for millennia, alone for so long that she thought she preferred it that way. Her siblings, for she had many, hadn't even noticed her absence and she had given up on seeking their approval long ago and our goddess set out to be by herself forever. Alone in her little corner of...wherever the gods live (for there is much debate around this), our goddess spent her days relaxing and thinking, and perhaps most importantly, dreaming.   It was said that one night, although “night” may be a strong word as how can there be a night without moon or sun, though I suppose one isn’t meant to be a pedant when it comes to gods or one would be here for a day and a “night” as the saying goes. Nevertheless, I will digress for the sake of stirring us away from such a philosophical debate you were not given time to prepare for.   One night the great goddess did as she always did after a long day of doing not much at all and she fell asleep. During this sleep, she began to dream. She dreamt of large rocks (or planets, as they would become known), swirling and whirling around her, making her rather dizzy until she managed to steady them in place. She dreamt of moons and stars to fill the gaps between the rocks. Using colours unimaginable to us mere mortals, she made the galaxy. She found the galaxy cold, so she made the sun which burned her hands and threw it far from our world much like a hot potato I would imagine. The heat of the sun burned her so much that as it left her hands, she woke up with a shock. Looking down at her real-not-dreaming hands she was even more shocked to find that they were charred. She looked around her and saw the planets, stars, moons she had created. She rubbed her eyes and was sure this was still a dream. When she looked around her again, everything was still there.   Being such an intelligent, and therefore curious goddess, it was said that she shrunk and shrunk herself down until she was small enough to stand on one of the large rocks she had created (though she was still a titan by our standards). She then fell, plunged, most gracefully I am sure onto the nearest rock planet.   She looked around her, expecting much, and found the planet to be plain, empty, utterly boring.   “Is this all I can come up with?” She said disappointment brimming forth in every word. She shook her head and knew this would not do. “If this is all I can dream up, then what good is dreaming at all?” But how to replicate this, she thought to herself. She had not wanted to say it aloud for fear that it would hold her back her remembering. So again, much as she did every day our goddess sat and thought and seemingly did not do much at all. She thought for so long and so hard that she found her eyes closing, her mind wandering to the land of dreams and soon she was fast asleep.   Around her she could see the barren wastes and she could see herself, sleeping! Such a lazy so and so, she thought, leaving me to do all the hard work as usual.   So the goddess turned away from herself and got to work. First, she made the sky. A blue so blue that she impressed herself. Then, she made the rivers, oceans and other waters. She liked the other blue so much she thought she must make it again, but this blue came out deeper and in other places was not blue at all for imagination is fickle. Unsure of how to change it, and liking it anyway, she moved on. Next she made grass, trees, and plants. These colours were much like the colours of the galaxy, there were so many it made her head spin but could not find herself stopping as she made apples, wheat and carrots. More and more she made until she was quite out of ideas today. She looked back at her sleeping self and nodded. This was good. She could spend the rest of eternity here. So our goddess went back to herself and woke up once more.   “This is much better,” she proclaimed. She was excited to taste her bounty and ran around trying everything she could find. It is said that on the fifth orange, she let out an unexpected (even to her) sigh. “I have created this and still I am not completely satisfied.” You see, no matter who or what you are whether creation or god, you will sometimes find yourself wanting. In this case, it is said that the Goddess wanted company after all these millennia alone, she’d started to miss her siblings dearly. “What good is all this I have made if I share it only with myself?” she asked.   This time she thought hard, rooted herself into the earth, and thought of her siblings. What they had once looked like, what they were like, how they had once made her laugh and smile and even how they made her cry when they didn’t notice her. Well these creations would be different she assured herself. She closed her eyes and thought. Thought for so long that the moon came up and the sun came up though how many times this cycle happened has always been debated. Some like to paint our goddess as naturally gifted only taking one sun-and-moon cycle to come up with us and not as the hard working Goddess I’m sure she was taking as much time as she needed for perfection.   When she was finally done conjuring up her siblings memories, she opened her eyes and her heart sank. Disappointment befell her. Nothing was there. She hadn’t been able to do it and her eyes filled with tears we are told made the sea salty.   “Are you ok?” A small voice said behind her.   “Don’t be so sad, pretty lady,” another voice said and soon a chorus of voices and sounds were talking to her, reassuring her. She turned around and there they all were. Her creations! Some were on four legs, prototypes, small tests of her ability like the creatures we know as dogs, cats, elephants. There were birds without real wings that waddled so joyously and birds with wings that could bring themselves up to her and fly around her large goddess head. And there was also her most beloved creation, humans in the likeness of herself and her siblings. She wrapped her arms around them all and proclaimed her love, her everlasting devotion to her children.   And In that moment, we are told, she knew would never be lonely again.
Year 2 (2020) | Creative Writing Class | 1216 words   Prompt: Write a creation myth   Another year where myths were a big theme we looked at, but with more context around them being the first stories that were told. I took a bunch of inspiration from lots of different things and places and just kind of went hard on this narrative voice.
