Pelagoka

Overview

Pelagoka, also known as Seagrain and Rice of the Ocean, is a type of flowering seagrass found all along the coast waters of the Queendom of Vreabia. Harvested by hand and then processed, it creates the staple food of the Queendom.

Location & Ecology

Flourishing mainly in cooler ocean waters, you often find this plant in bays, lagoons and along most of the shorelines. Preferring calm waters, it grows in sandy or muddy ground.   This plant is a very important part of the local ecosystem, sustaining many varied forms of life. From fishes to bivalves and other types of molluscs. All these creatures use it for a place to hide from predators while growing or as a food source.

Description & Uses

A flowing grass that grows upwards with a tall stem and long green leaves. During its fruiting period, it has a small series of grains form close to the top of the stalk in a clear husk. It spreads rapidly along the coast during its reproduction cycle.   Mainly known as a food source, the Pelagoka grain has become one of the main staples across the nation. They describe the rice made from the grain as having a fresh and briny taste. Somewhat reminiscent of the sea. Smaller settlements along the coast have used the main body of the plant as a type of roof thatching. They also use it in the cultivation of animals as a fodder, or feed.

Dishes

The way they consume the rice is often an indicator of where in the Queendom they are from. Around the capitol, they often make it into balls with spiced fillings of meat however in the countryside and the small villages they often grind the grains and husks up into a flour to make it last longer and then make wraps with it which they fill with spiced vegetables.   This technique is being adopted by the city folk where they combine the flour with ground Levin seeds to create a special mix that has the taste of the sea and the electric buzz of the clouds once made into bread.
