Human

HUMAN These were the stories of a restless people who long ago took to the seas and rivers in longboats, first to pillage and terrorize, then to settle. Yet there was an energy, a love of adventure, that sang from every page. Long into the night Liriel read. lighting candle after precious candle. She'd never given much thought to humans, but these stories fascinated her. In these yellowed pages were tales of bold heroes, strange and fierce animals, mighty primitive gods, and a magic that was part and fabric of that distant land.   —Elaine Cunningham, Daughter of the Drow   In the reckonings of most worlds, humans are the youngest of the common races, late to arrive on the world scene and short-lived in comparison to dwarves, elves, and dragons. Perhaps it is because of their shorter lives that they strive to achieve as much as they can in the years they are given. Or maybe they feel they have something to prove to the elder races, and that's why they build their mighty empires on the foundation of conquest and trade. Whatever drives them, humans are the innovators, the achievers, and the pioneers of the worlds.

Naming Traditions

Having so much more variety than other cultures, humans as a whole have no typical names. Some human parents give their children names from other languages, such as Dwarvish or Elvish (pronounced more or less correctly), but most parents give names that are linked to their region's culture or to the naming traditions of their ancestors.

GENERAL CUSTOMS Winter, once thought to a time of concern for food and warmth is now a time of happiness. The frozen ground slows the rate of the undead rising from the ground and this must be celebrated. Family units have gotten larger, grandparents and great grandparents are now living in the same household to strengthen and protect the family. Many of the customs and rituals of this world have long since died off. The long peaceful years have allowed the people of Thear to become complacent and forget the times before the Gods left this place. The birth of a child, while once a blessed event is now quite somber. Will your child accidently die only to become undead? The dead, once buried and the graves maintained by the families, are now burned to prevent them from becoming undead. EATING Everyone in the family has returned to eating together as a unit. Roast elk is considered holiday food and is associated with the newer winter celebration events. Forks, eating knives, and spoons, are used. Wines and Ales are common and very well crafted. Untreated water is safe to drink and the oceans are much less salty. The “place of honor” for a guest is at the right hand of the head of household who sits at the head of the table. Magical animals are never eaten as food. Food and seasoning are characteristic of different races, different cultures and different countries throughout Thear. GREETING AND MEETING When meeting someone, they are greeted differently throughout the world. A wave, handshake, or a bow are all used somewhere in the world. Magic users display the palms of their hands to each other upon meeting to display they are unarmed and not casting. A magic user hiding his/her palms changes the greeting gesture to an insult or threat.
