Episode L027: Alas Poor Duurth, I Knew Him Well

General Summary

Malanroot Tower
Pointerday, the 4th day of Frost, 4078   Hasdraek is in the middle of a fight with several Minotaur Skeletons when they suddenly stop and make as if to howl, though no sound comes out of their skeletal gullets. However, something has heard their calls, and a large horde of Skeletons descend on Hasdraek’s position. He breaks and runs.   Hasdraek encounters Duurth, his Githzerai comrade from the battle of Gimblestone. Duurth leads him out of this labyrinth of stairs to a second iron bound door. Bursting through this door, the two find themselves in a chamber more strange than the previous. Here, gravity seems to have no meaning, as passages lead to a solid wall which Duurth then embarks, whereupon the wall becomes a floor.   Duurth says he has been here before, and wants to show something to Hasdraek. They travel through this Escherian landscape until they reach what appears to be a dead end. Where upon they are beset by Intellect Devourers. Suddenly Duurth turns on Hasdraek but Hasdraek kills him. The Intellect Devourers attempt to subdue Hasdraek with their psyonics but he is immune to it. He destroys them all. The battle over, Hasdraek searches the body of his former friend only to find his skull burst open and an Intellect Devourer emerging from it.   At length, Hasdraek reaches a third iron bound door which he breaks down. Within, he finds a peaceful fountain, with a statue of a fair maiden pouring an urn into a pool. The water is refreshing and a nearby tree provides restorative fruit. He falls asleep on a settee and awakens the next morning refreshed.
Malanroot Tower
Thumbday, the 5th day of Frost, 4078   Hasdraek moves on through the opposite door and climbs yet another flight of stairs, though this one is qualitatively different - less hostile, less travelled.   After three quarters of an hour, he comes across a balcony set in an alcove, off the main corridor. The balcony looks out into complete darkness. Hasdraek ties a rope to the balustrade and climbs down, but he reaches the end of the rope, and still the bottom is not seen.   Hasdraek lets go the rope. His hunch about the magic ring he found after defeating the lurker proves correct, and he feather-falls to the floor of the chamber - a floor covered by all sorts of treasure. He lands in a knee-deep pile of gold. He has found the dragon’s hoard.
