Episode L025: The Approach to Malanroot Tower

General Summary

Gun Garum
Ringday, the 27th day of Deep Woe, 4078
The following morning, Hasdraek descends to the courtyard, intent on pushing on to Malanroot Tower, as captain Thrabus Gorthan prepares to take a unit of dwarves investigate Hasdraek’s claim of having killed two Ettins. As their routes lie in the same direction, Hasdraek accompanies the detachment to the site of his battle with the Ettins, where he receives a chit confirming his right to the 350gp bounty for the slaying of the monsters, undersigned by Gorthan himself. Gorthan and his detachment continue on down the crevasse while Hasdraek doubles back to makes his way to the mouth of the tunnel leading to the basement entrance of Malanroot Tower.   There he spends the night, dreaming again of being robbed, and of the nefarious face of Famath BenGuilliam. As before, he awakens to find all his belongings are present, including the mysterious stone that sings a forlorn song. This time Hasdraek attempts to speak to it; he hears a sharp intake of breath from the other end, and then silence.
The King’s Corridor
Middleday, the 28th day of Deep Woe, 4078
Hasdraek enters the tunnel that he was told by Captain Gorthan would lead to the entrance to Malanroot Tower. The smell is overpowering, and the stone through which he travels is dark and unnatural.   At last he emerges from the tunnel into a large chamber filled with a putrid smell liquid, opaque and milky blue. Into the foul smelling liquid he slips, on the verge of retching as he explores the cavern. A secondary cave to the right reveals a tall statue that questions him. Finding him worthy it tells him, “speak the name Iphigenia Amitee when the way seems uncertain.”   Continuing his exploration, Hasdraek comes to a raised area with a door bracketed by two tall red banners, almost 30’ high. They are magically animated and show various scenes of carnage, presumably from the history of the tower. Hasdraek recognizes illithids among the moving images. He also sees the dragon Zorrosolasthoosoch who is said to have been slain during the raising of the tower along with scenes that may be of the wizard Iphigenia and the Council of Loresh. As he approaches the door, it begins slam open and then closed, violently, as though two forces were acting upon it: one to open it, one to close it. Hasdraek dashes through the door, avoiding being hurt by the unpredictable thing, and finds himself in a columned hall with images of fierce knights set in tableaux between the columns. A staircase lies at the end of the hall.   He begins to walk toward the stairs, but as he comes abreast of the two first tableaux, the knights represented therein step out of the frames, weapons drawn.   Hasdreak dispatches four of these knights, by the time the fight ends.
