Episode L011: Clearing out the Hideout

General Summary

After defeating the last of the Torence Flackland Gang, Hasdraek and his motley crew of villagers secure the hideout, going from room to room. As they reach the bank of a swiftly flowing underground stream, they encounter a bandit who surrenders. The bandit, Morn by name, relates how he joined the gang, not out of his own will, but out of desperation. He was then used by the more senior members as a slave and errand boy. Taking this man at his word, Hasdraek shows compassion and lets him live. He uses Morn to navigate the tunnel complex and eventually locate the two treasure rooms. The treasure hoard is substantial, comprising almost a dozen heavy bags of coins and gems, weapons, spices, bolts of cloth, dinnerware, and spirits.

Across the stream, Hasdraek discovers the cadaver of a dwarven merchant from house Brylmora. He cuts out the crest emblazoned into the cadaver's garment.   The decision is made to split the loot 50/50: half for Hasdraek, who lead the attack, and the other half divided among the villagers who helped him.   The group then decide to return to Rhyme Tree to enlist the help of the other villagers in bringing down the wealth, but they find that the villagers have barricaded themselves in the manor house across the river, and are currently fending off an assault by six, diminutive, but vicious looking humanoids, all wearing red caps. The bodies of two villagers - including young Trithil Hanforth who had initially volunteered for the assault on the Torence Flackland Gang, but who's obvious nervousness and fear had resulted in him staying behind.   Immediately Hasdraek attacks, but the Redcaps are more than a match for the seven adventurers. Soon Eanswyth Gardner, and the blacksmith Sage Gander lie dead in pools of their own blood. Hasdraek notices that his sword, Athandrim, is humming in its scabbard. He draws it and finds his attacks dealing much more damage than any normal blade should. The tide turns favour of the adventurers, however, as the initial larger group that had fled during the first encounter with Torence Flackland stream out of the manor and join battle. This larger group destroys the red-hatted attackers, but now five more villagers are gravely wounded.   After the dust settles, the wounded are tended to, and the story of the Redcaps emerges. After the bandits who had invaded Rhyme Tree, three days, were killed, it was noticed that the blood that had seeped into the dirt was slowly being imbibed by what looked like four little red mushroom caps, just visible above the surface of the gravel. The following day, the red mushroom caps had grown to the size of a human head and the Redcaps burst out of the ground, sickles in hand, and crying out for blood. Most villagers were in the manor, boarding it up and preparing it for defence when two villagers sounded the alarm. Soon the redcaps appeared and began assaulting the manor, kicking at the boarded up windows, and doing noticeable damage.   When the redcaps were defeated, Hasdraek indeed observed the formation of eight small red mushroom caps in the ground where pools of blood were forming. He ordered the villagers to dowse the bloody ground with oil and set it alight. Tiny, shrill screams are heard from the ground.
