Episode L004: Into Beargrove

General Summary

On his newly acquired horse and cart, and in the magical guise of an unremarkable wool merchant, Hasdraek sets off the following morning for Beargrove and the Wool Auction. The trip is quiet and uneventful until he arrives on the north bank of the Little Bear River. There, a pair of guards are exacting a toll on the bridge. Ahead, Hasdraek hears cries of dismay and protest as the wealthier travellers are required to pay a toll that they clearly know is fraudulent.
The two guardsmen, Pauncher Dix and Raimer Goodfellow stand before Hasdraek, and refuse to let him pass until he's paid their bribe. Goodfellow, is the more agressive of the two, while Dix simply goes along with the scheme. Soon Hasdraek is past the toll, several silver coins the poorer.
Hasdraek stops at the Brown Fox Inn, on the main street in Beargrove, and takes a room, and a meal. He then explores the town, getting his bearings and obtain some information on his new sword and the necklace that he is using. On the advice of the innkeeper, he takes a left turn at Spindle Alley and seek out a dwarven seer named Beothür Gudrüm. Gudrüm is no seer, but she does identify Hasdraek magical items.
The sword is named Athandrim the Fey Slayer, a mighty weapon made of cold-wrought iron that is especially effective against fey creatures. The necklace is a necklace of disguise, that allows the wearer to create an illusion about their person that changes their physical appearance.
Hasdraek then sells his superfluous sword at the blacksmith's, a no-nonsense man named Harindal Bonnellet who purchases the sword without a superfluous word.
Hasdraek then returns to the market and examins the layout of the place, noting the stage being set up for tomorrow's wool auction. Suddenly a boy brushes past him, running toward the workers building the stage. Then a voice calls out from behind him, "Ridger, slow down!" The boy's mother and father walk quickly by, catching up with the boy and gently scolding him for leaving their side.
Ridger
Could this be the Ridger Haverstraw that he is supposed to observe? He seems to be the right age, and his family could concievably be in Beargrove for the wool auction, being sheep farmers. Hasdraek observes, the happy family as they approache the stage, and then walk on towards errands of their own.
When they are out of sight Hasdraek returns down the main street and enters Auchenster's Apothecary and perchases several potions from the owner, Aunchenster Glenhelm.
He then returns to the Brown Fox and supper.
