Roland
“In all my years, I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a nation quite like Roland. The sun is always shining, the birds are always singing, and the King actually gives a damn about his people.” –Torvin Drash, adventurer
Kingdom of Roland
Structure
The Rolandian government is an absolute monarchy under the rule of King Siegfried Roland II, though Rolandian rule is considered quite benevolent by international standards. Unlike royals in other societies, Rolandian princes traditionally marry someone from the peasant class as opposed to members of the nobility. This is both to prevent incestuous bloodlines as well as to keep the rulers of Roland apprised and focused on the needs and concerns of the peasant class.
Culture
The people of Roland are among the happiest of Arda, as their lives are lived with minimal interference from the government or dangerous external agents. An economy of farmers, skilled tradesmen, religious monks, and educated scholars make for a well-balanced society where most basic needs are readily met. Taxes are nonexistent for the poor and low for everyone else, so many Rolandians have extra money to spend on some minor luxuries. The people have been making inroads in expanding youth education in recent years. Roland is also a land of adventurers, as many choose to simply put down their roots there while passing through or retire there after visiting.
