Middlehold
Middlehold, nestled on a windswept island just off the coast of the Finger Forest island, is a vibrant haven for roughly 2,000 halflings. Established 300 years ago by a band of adventurous souls, it has become a model of halfling ingenuity and a testament to their love of comfort amidst the harshest elements. The constant wind that whips around the island isn't a foe here, but a mischievous companion that the halflings have learned to work with, not against.
Wind is Middlehold's ever-present dance partner. Whimsical windmills, often with brightly painted sails, adorn the hillsides. These mills, smaller but more numerous than human ones, grind flour for delicious second breakfasts, power workshops for crafting intricate toys and useful tools, and even pump water from deep reservoirs located inland. Wind chimes of seashells and polished stones decorate the town, tinkling melodically with every gust, a constant reminder of the wind's capricious nature.
The halflings of Middlehold are primarily farmers, coaxing a surprising abundance from the thin, windswept soil. They cultivate hardy vegetables, plump berries in sheltered hollows, and even cultivate special strains of pipeweed that thrive in the constant breeze. But the sea's bounty is not forgotten. When the tide recedes, revealing the ocean floor, the town becomes a hive of activity. Halfling families, armed with baskets and nets, cheerfully descend upon the exposed seabed, gathering shellfish, seaweed, and the occasional bit of flotsam and jetsam.
