Sun's Eye

"I was visiting a hospital to treat a cut I had taken when I fell down Black Port when... I had an encounter with an old lady. She had Sun's Eye.   I hadn't seen this disease in a long while, I'd forgotten how swollen your eyes could get, her veins filled were with yellow puss. I remembered how it could travel down the ocular nerves. She probably had it in her brain.   I don't want to think about it, not after who I've lost to it."

Transmission & Vectors

"Alright, I've sobered up. I should probably write down what Sun's Eye is for anyone who's reading this.   Sun's Eye is a genetic disease, passed through genetics. It can be traced back to the era of blood, believed to be a curse sent down from the Sentinal Sun to punish a cunning wizard."

Causes

"Sun's Eye usually remains dormant, 80% of those with the condition (perhaps more) live their entire lives not knowing they have it. Though once in an eclipse, the Sun's Eye has been known to violently awaken in the host, always starting in the ocular regions and working it's way to the brain.   It's believed to be cause by intense emotional stress, malnutrition and even from living for too long, those afflicted seem to range from their 60s to 70s. My mother wasn't so lucky.... These days, in the age of Waning, it's much, much rarer to see Sun's Eye flare up. The Sun simply doesn't have as much malice."

Symptoms

"Symptoms of Sun's eye include, itching, sudden violent episodes, weakness, spasms, difficulty speaking, inflammation of the eyes and most notably the blood vessels around infected areas being filled with yellow, metallic puss and the iris turning icy white causing the eye to go blind.   When I saw that woman I was reminded of my mother in her death bed, her eyes bulging from the fluids, her body convulsing and contorting as the infection worked its wriggling golden tendrils to her nerves as her eyes stared at me like some perverse and abhorrent eldritch star of an age long gone, it's name forgotten like writings in the sand. Father didn't have the heart to end her pain, neither did I. But I couldn't see her like this. As I looked into her shimmering, depth ridden eyes, in her last moment of lucidity I heard her say her last words."   "Julie. I-I'm sor-ry I c-can't be here for.. You... I k-know y-ou don-'t l-like to sta-y-y at h-h-ome. Sso, go ou-tt.. And explore. Live. For the both of us. I love you."   "My mother was 36 when she died. I thought She would have lived longer, even with Sun's Eye. But she's already given me so much, she must have worked herself to the bone. I can't squander all that she's given to me, this opportunity to see the world. I will live, for the both of us."

Treatment

"There's no possible cure for Sun's Eye in the Waning age, other than removal of the infected eye(s). Preferably before it can reach the ocular nerve. In the age of Waning, a lot of treatments were rendered useless with the loss of Ether. So many cutting edge technologies and medicines by all sorts brilliant minds could save these people from suffering if they only had an alternate energy source. If only the Dragon Queen was still alive. She could have showed us how to route this "electricity" jazz."

History

Records from old sources detail the story of how a foolish sorcerer attempted to cheat the sun in the age of Blood and was cursed to have eyes that shone in the light. We have one of those stories here.   "Konstantine was a cunning mage. When Konstantine was young, he fooled a spider into giving him a gem, in exchange for a wish he never granted. So charismatic his words, the Spider still believes by the river to this day for him to return. When he was a man, Konstantine offered the "finest silks" to the Elf king, so beautiful were the painted parchments, the Elf king was fooled into offered him his daughter, to which Konstantine smartly declined. And when Konstantine was old, he wished for the Sun to grant him eternal life, in exchange for his favorite staff. But the Sun was not fooled. The Sun could see, that it was only a twig. But the Sun did offer him eternal life, and eyes that matched his radiance for him and his children. Konstantine was thrilled by the thought of such beauty, no woman would ever resist glowing, charming eyes whose shine matched the Great Sentinal Sun. But the Sun was not beautiful that day. The sun was always bloodied from battle. In pain, but serving as a reminder. And as the sun gave him life eternal, but his eyes were shot, they grew yellow and metallic. They looked like tainted gold, and then Konstantine was blind. Konstantine still lives by the river, with the spider that he fooled. The spider took one look at Konstantine, and saw that he was not sad, but proud to live forever. "Why are you smiling, Konstantine?" "I'm finally immortal." "But your eyes are now gone, your bones now creak and you haven't granted my wish." "What are eyes to a long life filled with new experiences? And your wish had been granted, it was to see me suffer." "True. Sit down by me, Konstantine. Let us enjoy the sun's warmth together." And so they did, and Konstantine had never been prouder".
