The Darwin Empire

History

The Darwin Empire was founded by Mophsis Dictum who united the Darwin tribes living in caves in Mophu. It was believed that he was giving divine knowledge after meeting Ithim the god of knowledge; he established the tribes into families each with a different focus in skills. After that, all of the Darwin families keep occupations within their families and passed down one job within their family. Often some families overlap but in general, the families that work in smithing only take jobs in armor crafting, weapon making, or general metalwork. The merchants run the business as managers or work in the story. This however runs deep in the Empire. People who work in an occupation general are the only people who are allowed to know the knowledge associated with that work. The knowledge you with those skills, are you expected to pass down to other people in your family. Along with that tradition reigns supreme so families are expected to stay within their occupations. One does not leave these occupations unless the gods themselves have an intervention.   The Empire offers education and establishes schools all across their cities. Some find an issue with this. Only people from a specific family are allowed to attend specific schools, or at less, it is expected to be that way. They have a standard set of standards they teach across all schools but after that what else you learn depends on the school you attended. For the Darwin Empire educating the population is the most important effort. They ensure that within the standard set of teaching, each person understands fully the rule of the gods, interpretation of discovers of the universe, math needed for your occupation, reading and writing skills along with what being part of the empire means. The Empire is the most advanced place on Kosmon, or at less that is what they teach. They have metalworking and steam-powered technology integrated as part of their society. Water is pumped from the deep boiling water streams from the mountain beneath. They have special Dunamis light sources that light up the streets and houses instead of torches or candles. Under the ground, they have a great steam-powered wagon system that people claim you can use to travel to each city in Mophu within a day if you use it. They perfected the art of architecture (At less in their own thought) and have created hybrid metal stone towers that have been carved into the mountainous landscape of Mophu.    They use steam power to make machines that are used to great die pressed parts for armor and even disposable silverware from metal. They discovered ways to great indoor gardens to grow plants year-round regardless of the conditions of the soil or weather. They can food and serve ale in identical glass processed bottles. They also have created textile clothes that are made with blends of different natural materials (thin leather strips, cotton, silks) and thin metal wires that have been machined into sheets for later use. With all this glory, many who visit the Empire have a different opinion.    They talk about how the people live in concrete boxes stacked on top of each other that are too small for a person to live in, let alone a family. Many talk about how sailing into ports, the smog created by the Darwin factories can be seen and smelled of in the distance. Many say that the Ale flows endlessly in the empire but some say it's addictive and used to control the people. Many say that those who have been educated through the darwin schools are single-minded and only believe in the ideals of the empire. It is often even known, by the people living in the empire, that there are generally three classes of people. The Royal or Ruling families, Upper classes of the government, military or financially important jobs, then the lower class of everyone else. Those who visit the empire often speak about how there are extreme gaps between these three groups. More recently the Empire colonized Balam and a servant class as emerged. Many argue that the only difference between the lower class and the servant class is a legal definition. But who reads the legal laws of the Empire; with a legal code that spans three books each with 500 pages cover to cover with a list of laws, clarifications, exception, and conditional laws. Only the people who work in basic legal work or people who need to know parts of the law learn anything past the basics first 30 pages of the citizens condense verse of the first book know what is actually in the law. It is said that some of the upper classes will simply pull out a book and recite from it a law and few even know it existed, let alone if they could read the great vocabulary needed to interpret it.   Along with this, there are those who claim that there is an agency that operates in the Empire in secret. There are only rumors of this group and few can claim to have any first-hand knowledge of them. This might be because they take care of any loose ends and hide completely any evidence. Some claim that the Kruptos acts as the private hand of the Dictum family as the eyes, ear, and daggers of the Emperor himself. They are said to have access to all parts of government above all the rest of the social structure of society. But then again these are just stories.   Because of this, there is a great hierarchy in the empire, and each person my never turn away from the orders of a superior. The Ruling family of Mophu controls everything; made up of Empires Mophsis Dictum’s children. The Dictum family oversees the rest of the families and after that, the Royal families oversee the top portions of Government and management of all the empires. The Ruling families started with Mophsis Dictum and extends to his children. After some time the name of a few of his later children and some of his grandchildren were changed to make distant lineages to tell who was in charge of what. The Ruling families are the Dictum who manage the military and oversee everything else, Direc who oversees legal matters and Dunamis, Lusis who oversees distribution and transportation, Gilum  who oversee mining and factories, and Kurlum who oversee production of products, selling and city sanitation. After the colonies of Balam were adopted into the empire the ruling family did not have enough members who were of age to oversee the colonies so they adopted the Kaphis family for the job.

Demography and Population

The average citizen of the Empire, they do not own any land-based property. Instead, they rent the homes they live in and only own the property they buy that is placed within their home. Property within the home is first recognized legally by the first listed home renter and after the second (generally a spouse) and so on. Even if a son of age buys something and brings it into the household, it is seen as the primary hold renters property until that son leaves and if the primary home renter of their own property. As a person dies they rule over the property goes to the next eligible person on the list and the list is then reordered.

Technological Level

The Empire has Steam-power all over the empire driving everything from elevators to smithing presses. Because of this, Darwin has engineered their own semi-metal cloth, have produced disposable silverware, cooking systems that make an extremely large amount of food and drink perfectly the same under constant pressure and temperature. Only in the empire will you find boats that have charcoal rudders, hand lighters, pens, and perfectly crafted crossbows.

Religion

The Empire as established [The Order of Mophu] which both upholds the religious traditions and teaching of Dunamis. Any person who shows any promise in the ways of Dunamis is watched by [The Order of Mophu].

Foreign Relations

The Darwin Empire has created bonds with the Skydar of Caro and the mysterious people known as the Mayfer. Mostly because they all follow the Demez Circle. The Darwin Empire sees their skills are talented people and often like to employ them. On the other hand the Darwin Empire found the Folcar of Balam to be rather weak people following gods that are not found as part of the Demez Circle. As such they are going to lose the great competition anyway and have subjected their lands.

Agriculture & Industry

The Empire is a great mining power along with having advanced steam-powered mechanics. They have great factories the produce uniformly cut metal goods from molds. They have created a textile fabric that uses thin metal wire that is used as a filler with cotton and silk. Because of their knowledge they have created greenhouses that are used to grow all the native plants of Mophu year around and in great quantities. Most of the food grown is in the form of mushrooms and shrubs, which in some other races presents a mild poison but to the Darwin normal food. They normally can their food and through the empire, brand names are extremely vital as one canned mushroom might have one distant flavor but another would have something different. It is expected that unless a can is expired the flavor is exactly the same for a particular brand no matter the time of years.

Education

The Empire has a basic set of knowledge that all in the empire learns. Darwin schools are all similar in this as they all learn from a core citizen's teaching. This involves basic math skills, reading and writing in Darwinian, basic fundamental laws, the Darwin understanding of the cosmos and of the gods. From there the schools differ widely. The Darwinian schools are all separated based on family traditions and after the basic teaching, different schools will educate their students for the occupations they are expected to learn in life. The bankers and upper-class businessmen would go to school together, the fishermen and greenhouse workers would attend the same school, and possibly the smiths and factory workers. But never would these students overlap into disciplines that are not regularly connected. Because of this outsiders of the Empire see education as either extreme specialization or as depriving people of society and economical opportunities. Generally for the higher-level schools' dues are expected which only the wealthy can afford.

Infrastructure

The Empire has a vast system of pipes that carry steam, hot water, and cold water all across the empire and even to other cities. The cities are often engineered so that the streets below are shadowed by bridges that connect multiple levels of buildings acting as handing streets. There re-light posts everywhere giving light (although dimly in power districts) across the empire day and night. The Darwin factories send a dense smog across the land that sometimes gives a fog in districts with lower-income housing. From different parts of the cities, one can feel the rumbling of the mountains as a train system connects the entire empire. Some say that it only takes half a day to travel to the farthest extremes of the empire because of how fact and direct the system is. Each build is directly connected to the sewer system and the streets have flood protection pips to keep the streets relatively draw and puddle free.

One cannot kill a Drudge unless the empire approved of it because they were often colonist and stories where expected to be made up and done publicly to hide petty crimes.
