Khanave E

Khanave E is a massive geothermal power plant that extends tens of thousands of kilometers along the entirety of the Khanavaic Ridge, siphoning the energy of the frequent volcanic eruptions along the oceanic ridge to generate power.

Purpose / Function

Khanave E is the single largest power geothermal plant on Valenor that does not siphon energy directly from the planet's mantle. Most of this power goes to Pandora, the most energy-intensive province of Valenor, per capita, and the biggest contributor to the construction and maintenance of Khanave E.

Alterations

Early operation of Khanave E began almost as soon as the first section of the plant was completed, when it only operated on one volcanic outlet. However, it was always the plan to enhance the operation of the plant over time, and since operation first began, it has expanded into a nearly thirty thousand-kilometer long complex, collecting power from countless volcanoes and generating enough energy to power an entire continent.   The most notable single alteration to Khanave E was the construction of the equatorial operation center, standardizing the operation of the entire facility. It also included a commons for the Global Energy Commission.

Architecture

Khanave E's architecture is fairly standard for an underwater industrial building but scaled up, with additional nickel in the alloy used to construct the exterior to protect the facility from the heat of sublithospheric material. It is constructed to fulfill its function, not to look elegant, except in its equatorial operation center, the site of most public tours, which includes a commons for the Global Energy Commission.

Defenses

To prevent the high pressure underwater environment from damaging the structure, each section is cylindrical or spherical. This ensures the entirety of the walls are self-reinforced, without corners that create weak points. Every door can be hermetically sealed, and no two consecutive doors can be opened at once without an override for circumstances such as material transport or medical emergencies.   Recorded calls of oceanic predators and unpleasant but harmless chemicals keep the vast majority of wildlife away from the complex, not to mention the distinct lack of food due to the use of localized herbicides. Any remaining animal presence is warded off by robot sentries that patrol the premises. When a robot needs to be charged, it returns to the nearest garage in the facility to recharge, swapping places with its paired robot.   The entire complex, inside and out, is outfitted with security sensors, recording video, audio, temperature, and pressure. A small but well-trained living security force monitors the complex, but the majority of the security work is performed autonomously. Security robots are deployed automatically in the event of a security breach or other emergency.   All workers within the complex use biometric data in order to enter non-public areas. They must sign in and out when they enter and leave the complex and must keep an identification of some kind on their person. Anyone who enters the facility must have any bags or containers searched before being allowed to enter.   Arms are strictly prohibited within the facility, but the security robots and guards are equipped with harmless stun weapons that may be used in the event of a security breach, whether by a person or animal.

Tourism

Khanave E does not receive much tourism, and only select areas are open to the public, such as the lobby of the main operation center. Those that do visit tend to be students studying engineering, energy sciences, or a similar subject. The facility has an apprenticeship program that allows students to work at Khanave E for their final year of university, and students who participate in the program are automatically eligible to work at the facility full time upon graduation with a higher base salary than entry-level employees.
