Session 4: Rubble & Ruin

Monday, November 16th, 2020 6:30pm-9:30pm

General Summary

Preparing to leave Raven's Crest, the party opted to close off all potential entrances to the dungeons beneath the town. First burning down the house with the hidden entrance using one of Duul's Firebolts and then Eldin and Slab throwing Ghozun into the building in order to activate his Hellish Rebuke (and taking 2 damage from getting glass in his bum), they also did a joint effort between Chompsky and Emyr to smash the entrance of the well. Carving a skull into a log, which they propped up against the well, they worked to have this operate as a warning sign for others not to settle here. In order to make sure that they don't inadvertedly tear down the entire forest, they opted to set up camp in the town, using the houses as shelter.   Duul set up camp in one of the houses with a fireplace, using such to start a campfire. Ghozun started hunting for firewood and looting the town. He managed to successfully find a total of 20GP and "A Beginner's Guide to Magic" bookEldin started looting the rest of the houses, specifically for preserved food and useful supplies. He managed to find some Venison Jerky and Preserved Apples. Slab set up camp in the bar. Uninterrupted, he set up his own camp and raided what remained of the alcohol supply. Lavug started looting the town for anything of value. Searching houses otherwise ignored, he managed to find a total of 15GP, 10 Rounds of Ammo, Basic Tools, 1 Bear Trap, supplies for 3 Rabbit Traps, and miscellaneous items of minimal value and consequences, left alone. Emyr started looking for food specifically for Chompsky, both in the town and in the surrounding forest. He also found some Venison Jerky, and in his hunting managed to locate and hunt a fresh rabbit, which will likely be additionally purposed for a Lucky Rabbit's Charm.   This done, they began to proceed through the night, with Ghozun taking specific care to correct Lavug's use of Chompsky's pronouns, when he offered up traps for Emyr to use for his new friend's diet. In lieu of socializing, the group starts to prep for sleep, with Duul casting Detect Magic to verify that nothing new has appeared in the area. While he went about this, Eldin passed around the food he'd found, which ended up as enough for the night's rations. Afterwards, the night went by peacefully, and the breaking dawn of a new day travelled over the horizon calmly.   With the carriage is less than ideal shape and no other items of any real value remaining, the party, along with Coprix, climbed into the carriage and set on the way, with Emyr, mounted on Chompsky, following alongside. At the risk of the horse dying from exhaustion, Ghozun loaded up the horse into the carriage and attempted to start pulling the cart himself. This turned out to be a miserable failure, where Ghozun sank into the mud. With Emyr and Eldin's aid, he was able to make it back out of the mud, losing his boots in the process. This, by effect, forced them to make camp for the night.
"As a Druid, I am One with the Mud." -Ghozun
Ghozun took the first watch at four hours. During the first hour, he was hit on the head by a random stray coconut from the sky, dropped by a pair of swallows; +1 Coconut. The second hour appeared uneventful, though the third hour brought distant, unknown noises. The fourth hour forced sleep on him, due to a delayed concussion combined with exhaustion. Eldin took the second watch at the remaining four hours, finding Ghozun, he checked his pulse, helped the Coconut into the Tiefling-Orc's inventory, and tried to rouse his friend to have him move to his bedroll proper. He did not succeed in waking him, nor in bringing him the bedroll by physical force. Instead, he threw said bedroll overtop him as a makeshift throw blanket... or a tarp on a corpse. During his shift proper, he noticed wolves curiously circling the camp, not prepared to attack, but certainly investigating; he fired a warning shot from his bow in their general direction, causing them to back off. He retrieved the arrow in question. It was the only remaining activity of the night. Emyr used part of the night to work on his Lucky Rabbit's Charm. Ghozun did not rouse with the morning as he normally might, and an exhausted Duul moved to rouse his brother, shaking him and telling him its time for the hunt, a turn-of-phrase used by their parents in their youth as a wake-up alarm. Eldin questioned him about the coconut. Ghozun has no recollection of the coconut, nor any idea what coconuts are.   Awake, Ghozun carried the horse out of the carriage. With the horse returned to his proper place at the lead of the carriage, Duul crawled into the back of the carriage to sleep, grumbling and tossing a blanket atop himself. Ghozun, while hooking the horse back up, fed it some of the berries that had been gathered throughout their travels. By the next evening, they have safely arrived back in Siarhaven. Approaching town, they notice a missionary of the Theocracy, Vodrio's Voice. It is known as being a newer religion, or rather more wildly practiced since the Calamity. They were founded on the basis of his original three Chosen, who ended the Calamity some hundred years back; they are well known for preaching against the dangers of magic. While the party studied the missionary and pondered how to respond to him, Ghozun broke off to stable the horse and see to it that he finally receive proper care; his time at the stable did not go terribly well, as the horse looked practically dead on his feet. The innkeeper inquired if the intent had been to try to kill the horse; he sighed and said that no, this was their best attempt at keeping the poor creature alive. The attempted miracle work cost him -5GP.
"How's the proselytizing going?" - Duul

Duul
and Eldin approached to investigate the man, dealing with his preaching, observed by Emyr atop his bear. Duul, from his time spent in the area, is aware that many of the townsfolk in this region still secretly keep shrines to Lodur, the god of magic who had been blamed for the Calamity; he did not so much as inquire about the religion as mockingly refute it. It was around the time that the disappointed missionary --- "tourist", as Duul referred to him --- left that Ghozun returned to them. Slab decided that it would be a good idea to follow after the missionary, "Your god doesn't do anything. He won't help you. It won't matter." With this said, he walked away, leaving the man flabbergasted and shaking his head, continuing his attempts at spreading his god's good word.   Emyr and Ghozun decided to check the market district while Ghozun hoped to have his axe upgraded, however the good Digger peddler was only the merchant, not the maker, and could only sell him premade items, rather than creating anything custom. He directed them to his brother in the capital, Scite Battlebreaker, who peddles specifically Wofrite wares. Finding nothing that specifically piqued their interest, the majority of the party decided to make their way back to the estate, dragging the carriage themselves. Duul instructed them to go on ahead and that he would catch up. Eldin offered to stay behind with him but was politely dismissed; Ghozun sent Emyr with gold to buy nutritional provisions for the party, to which the hybrid naturally prioritized Chompsky, spending a total of -7GP (3GP from Ghozun and 4GP from Emyr) on the food. With Chompsky pulling the carriage, they make it back to the estate in one piece and are greeted by Thimbald.   At the estate, Ghozun encountered a grumpy druidic man while waiting for Duul by the gate. He was making his way out of the estate, distressed, and now seems to believe the Tiefling-Orc to be a horrible person, as he appears to be aware of the state of the horse. His opinion of Ghozun has been made astonishingly low, while his sister's opinion of Emyr, seeing his close connection to Chompsky, has become rather positive. Slab took the downtime to try to determine how the weather might turn out, looking into the forecast. Failing miserably from lack practice, he prayed to his Goddess for the knowledge. She projected the week's weather: in three days, there would be scattered showers; but over the weekend it was going to be sunny. Slab owes his Goddess ONE (1) Favor. Ghozun opted to run after the male twin druid in a frenzy, immediately opting to tend to the horse himself. Casting Cure Wounds on the creature, he then requested the use of the inn's kitchen to prepare oatmeal for the beast. Around this time, Duul left the back of the merchant's square in a puff of smoke and fire and proceeded to the inn to check on the horse. There, he was directed to the kitchen, where he met up with his brother. The druid continued to think poorly of the Barbarian-Druid, but instructed the brothers to go ahead and lead the horse back to the estate; he would find other means. Clearly, Duul and him have had history, as he referred to the druid as a prick before moderately verbally threatening the horse to not reveal that Ghozun is, in fact, a big teddy bear at heart. He was accosted for this behavior by Ghozun, before they set about returning.   Back at the estate, Eldin checked in on Thimbald and Coprix, learning that the creature will never be the same, but can be made better. The estate will tend to his care and what rehabilitation they could. Eldin filled him in on what they discovered in Raven's Crest and offered the Oil Flask full of Eye Goop to him for study. He relayed the vision they received to the butler, though his memory of it is hazy. Thimbald, concerned, set about studying and investigating what occurred at the town. Lavug moved to where they had set up camp in the mansion before to set about reading the various journals that he had collected. With his weather report discovered, Slab set about looking for alcohol to consume and generally being lazy about the manor. As the sun began to set, the Painted Hide brothers returned, at which point Ghozun finally opted to bathe to remove the mud, and was directed to the bathhouse. Duul went to Lavug to inquire about the journals, learning that the owner of them had been investigating the Calamity and its cause. This researcher had brought the Eye back to the lab for study, having found it in his travels. As the journals went on, they eventually became little more than the ramblings of a mad man until the last, bloodied page. Much of the ramblings referenced some being known as, "The Old One".
"iN thE end iT wiLL conSumE uS aLL. In tHe END It wILL consUmE us ALL. intheenditwillconsumeusall." -  Raven's Crest deceased researcher
Discovering that Duul had returned to the manner, Thimbald sought him out to inform him of the financial state of the manor, which has relatively fallen into the Monk-Wizard's hands. He recommends seeking out the estate's previous investors or establishing a working relationship with the guilds for funding, as they have shown interest in the past but one the issue of political entanglements. As the rest of the party gathered to discuss their options, Ghozun joined them with a cloud covering his lower regions, declaring that he does not have clothes. Eldin broke away from the group to help him retrieve proper clothing, starting with a robe, before using Prestidigitation to clean his clothes.

Going Forward:

Amongst themselves, the players will need to discuss what route they want to take in regards to the estate. Will they seek out the investors? Will they seek out the guilds? The party may split up to investigate multiple avenues and sources. Investors will require individual, person-to-person attempts, as well as potential threats, mini-quests, and other issues. Guilds, on the other hand, would offer more funding but would put them in the political eye. They would be watched and relatively followed, potentially even controlled. A third avenue remains; they could turn the estate itself into own guild, and thus political power. By next session, the party must come to a consensus. Also, Ghozun needs boots.
