The Colossus of Verlona

The first men to sail up the storm coast were suprised to find a large statue of a mermaid guarding a bay. The crew decided that this was a good omen and weighed anchor in the bay so they could start building a new town. That town has become a huge port named Verlona. In time the statue gained the name of Colossus of Verlona. There is an agreement among the city and sailors coming into port that the Azure bay under Her watchful gaze is a peaceful area, so you may find pirates trying to race into her view to avoid capture. The peace brought about by the colossus doesn't extend into the city however. Historians and researchers have agreed that the colossus was probably a Goddess that was important in the forgotten time. There has been tests ran to be sure that there is no magic in the statue.

Purpose / Function

The original purpose for the large statue is lost to time but now it marks the entrance to Azure bay and Verlona as well as being a reminder of the uneasy peace that is enforced there

Alterations

In order to protect the base of the massive statue walls in the shape of tentacles have been put up around it. The gleaming metal has been enchanted to not rust or deteriorate from the waters effects as well as move to keep people from climbing them

Architecture

The Colossus is a 300 foot tall statue of a mermaid holding a trident with her tail coming up out of the water behind her. Her hair comes down her back in 2 large braids that loosely intertwine. She is made completely out of a dark stone that seems to not have eroded at all in centuries.
