Naming Traditions

Family names

Pirates come from many walks of life before adopting the lifestyle and camradie of piracy, and as such they bring their names from other cultures with them. Most will however get a nickname once they have joined a crew.

Other names

Most Pirates get a nickname once they join a crew. The names can come from almost anywhere like what you were before a pirate, how you look or even a item that you get associated with. Common exceptions to this were the captain and ranking officers on the ship who may have nicknames but were most often referred to by title or sir because of need to keep discipline on the ship

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Knowledge of thieves cant was common among pirates, other then that many pirates couldn't read. Captains and ranking officers often had a working knowledge of each language in their area to facilitate surrender communications

Shared customary codes and values

Each captain has a code that they get all new recruits to sign, this lists expectations of the crew as well as disbursement of loot and any punishments for dissobedience

Funerary and Memorial customs

Burials would happen at sea, and usually without much formality with the dead being attached to weights (usually cannonballs) and pushed overboard after a few words. The dead would then be food for the sea and they believe this will help keep the sea happy with them.

Atsuka Verast was the pirate that laid the groundwork for basically all piracy on the storm coast

No boys or women were to be on the ships though this was often overlooked because of difficulty to get new recruits at times

Major organizations

Piracy has been tied to Verlona since the early days of the city, though it is frowned on throughout most of the coast. There are several other Havens along the coast and out to sea, the largest is called Coral Harbor
