Ulkesh

The Principality of Ulkesh is a country in the Summerlands. It is bordered by Keyseri to the west, Hattusha to the north, and Kar-Dalai to the east. Once home to the capital of the Shairin Empire, Ulkesh still clings to the remains of its imperial heritage.

History

The last remnants of the Shairin Empire died slowly in the southwest of the Summerlands. As late as three generations after the death of Emperor Hesychios, families could still be found swearing loyalty to the Imperial Throne. Fighting amongst the aristocracy of Ulkesh hindered the nation's development. When the Principality was established in 498 SF by Yaşar Adadan, it was declared that the land was held in trust for the Shairin Emperor. Most recognized that 500 years after the empire's fall, it was unlikely that it would return in any familiar form, however the aristocracy persisted with this idea in mind.   In the early years of the Principality, Ulkesh tried to reclaim the former lands of the Empire. Each ruler hoped to be named as Emperor, but Keyseri and the future republic of Hattusha consistently drove them back. Kar-Dalai remained impenetrable by virtue of its geography and climate. Continued infighting amongst the aristocracy and the occasional usurper to the throne also hindered these expansion efforts.

Government

The rulers of Ulkesh style themselves as Bey or Begum, historical terms of address that traditionally used for the nobility closest to the Emperor. The sovereign reigns as a monarch, while maintaining that they are a vassal to the Shairin Emperor. The title is passed to the current ruler's eldest child, regardless of gender.   The current ruler is Bey Derya Adadan, who ascended the throne in 1001 SF.
