Saint Topolo the Overworlder

Due to the Nakra tunnels, Engi have been able to gaze up through the ice and look upon the stars since time immemorial. However, breaching the ice meant contact with the vacuum of space, and certain death. This meant that for most of Engi history, the surface of Engar was completely unexplored.   This changed with Topolo, the first Engi to set foot upon the surface. Hailing from the Great Monastery of Anartizza, Topolo designed and built a primitive pressure suit, and with it tunneled up to the surface, placing the first ever steps upon the jagged, icy, surface. Topolo immediately became a hero and celebrity, and would lead several expeditions to the surface before he ultimately died from complications due to radiation poisoning (his early suit designs did not properly account for the intensity of cosmic rays). The flurry of exploration continued well after his death, and within only a century of Topolo's first steps, the surface of Engar was completely charted. Despite many myths, legends, and folk tales to the contrary, no life was ever discovered on the surface, which lent credence to the (now obviously debunked) belief that there was no life on other worlds besides Engar. Topolo himself rejected this idea, and remained convinced of the existence of alien life, claiming he "knew they were out there, from the moment I looked upon their homes with my own unobscured eyes."   Topolo's name is synonymous with "Explorer" to the Engi, in much the same way as "Neil Armstrong" for humans, or "Ear-Dal" for the Orga. When the first Engi astronauts visited the moon of Avra, Topolo was the name of their ship, and to this day remains a frequent topic of song and poetry.
