The Society

It's been well over five centuries since insomnia spoiled the human species. When they lost the ability to sleep. What happened is unknown. Forgotten. Perhaps never understood in the first place. Not that anyone cares. It's the way it is now. It's the way its always been. Always will be. People get by.   It didn't happen overnight of course, it was gradual. And as a consequence so was the declining of society. But in the generations that followed, alongside the humans, a new race evolved; immune to the devastating effects of the insomnia.   This new race cannot sleep, don't have to. Unfamiliar to the very idea. Of course, they can see the effect the insomnia has on the humans around them, as they struggle in their zombie states – trying to find the aid they so desperately need to invigorate their weak bodies and minds. Their pills and their drugs and their sleeping parlors. It's pathetic.   Immune to the insomnia, people call these mutants the Insomunes, or just munes. Outnumbered but overpowered, the Insomunes have taken over many societies major organisations and institutes. Their ability to regenerate strength faster than they lose it, keep them with a constant upper hand against humans in the battle for power.   The Society is the result of a small ruling elite of Insomunes. It is not a country, not even a defined region. Rather it is more of a union, an agreement carried by its population, held together through the power of mega-corporations, criminal gangs and corrupt police forces.   This small group of Insomunes withdrew from the public several generations ago. No one knows where they are. Considered by themselves to be higher beings than humans, and the righteous rulers they control and manipulate all aspects of The Society as an ever-present ghostly force.
