The Shadows of Italy

The Republic of Serenissima’s capital looms in the distance, the lights of Venice towering high above the landscape. Dots of colour scatter around the city as drones and aircraft fly between destinations throughout the night, a few seen scanning the perimeter walls that defend the borders of the capital. In the distance, a lighthouse scans across the surface of the ocean – revealing a fleet of cargo ships in the distance, bringing colossal volumes of product in and out of the city.   As the beam turns away from the water, the only thing left visible in the waves is the colossal height of the Italian Arcology, a gargantuan pyramid of steel and technology, lit by its own external spotlights that frame it against the darkness of the night sky. Home to the masses of Corporate employees and executives that work on the island city of Lido – far from those of lesser privilege. The surrounding area is peppered with smaller towns, as well as several shacks built by refugees from GeMiTo, looking to rebuild a better life on the other side of the country. Checkpoints prevent many from getting to Venice proper, leaving Marghera to tend to the problem. Disease and illness have become rampant, and police have struggled to keep crime under wraps in the face of the sudden influx of people to the city who lack the proper Identification to live an honest life.   Alas, the life of a SINless does not often lead to splendour; but within the borders of Serenissima the local gun laws lead many to feel safe from gang activity. Yet below their feet, the shadows reign strong – old subway stations, sections of sewers, and old military bases have formed a network of interconnected communities of people. It’s path along the shore has brought it to be known as La Costa Ombreggiata – The Shadowed Coast.   There is where most second chances lie. Below the surface of Italy, amongst the tunnels and pathways, society is different, and the law of the surface has little hold. If you want it, you are almost certain to find it in the large markets of the Mestre district. If you are looking to hide from the law, there will be someone willing to let you stay – for a price. If you are looking for work, well, one of the many organizations in the undercity will gladly oblige.   For whatever reason it may be, you’ve found your way to Serenissima. Whether it be greed or necessity, or - god forbid - you’re doing it to make a difference; you’ve made it. Just don’t bite off more than you can chew, Omae.
