How to Build a Stronghold

1. Acquire a plot of land.
2. Gather building materials and laborers.
3. Oversee construction.

Royal charters and land grants are usually given by the crown as a reward for faithful service, although they can also be bought. Deeds can be bought or inherited. A small estate might sell for as little as 100 gp or as much as 1,000 gp. A large estate might cost 5,000 gp or more, if it can be bought at all.
The Building a Stronghold table shows the cost of building the stronghold (including materials and labor) and the amount of time it takes, provided that you are using downtime to oversee construction. Work can continue while you are away, but each day you are away adds 3 days to the construction time.
Additional tips: Choose a location that is defensible. You don't want your stronghold to be easily attacked. Make sure the stronghold is large enough to accommodate your needs. If you plan to have a large number of followers, you will need a big stronghold. Consider the climate of the region when choosing building materials. You don't want your stronghold to be destroyed by the elements. Have a plan for how you will defend your stronghold. You don't want it to be taken over by enemies.
