The Riftgrounds

Created by

A Pathfinder homebrew campaign setting.   Many different planes of existence incircle the Elder Realm to form the Endless Sphere, all of them anchored together by The Riftgrounds. Also called the Material Plane, The Riftgrounds are a finite realm, a single land stretching out across hundreds of miles before blurring into nothingness or the Great Rifts.   These rifts, cut into the fabric of the world, lay at the very east and western edges of the world. The rift in the east blurs into the realm of order, Utopia, while the rift of the west blends into the raw chaos of The Maelstrom. These rifts and the powerful energies they release shape much of the world, drawing creatures of like ideals naturally towards them and effectively dividing the world between law and chaos.   However, these are far from the only rifts that affect the world. The shifting cycle between the elemental planes has a pronounced effect on the weather, while a schism far above the world into the very heart of the Positive Energy Plane pours light onto the land. This too falls into a cycle, the planes of energy clashing back and forth to pour their power through the rift.   During the night, when negative energy rules the solar rift, still another realm can be seen. Outshone during the day, the Moon, a shimmering portal to Aterias, the realm of the arcane, casts a soft glow across the darkened world.   These prevalent tears in the veil between worlds weaken their boundaries, allowing creatures to slip through into the Riftgrounds more easily than they could across other planes.   As for the grounds themselves, even in the lawful part of the world, the land is very unexplored and fragmented. Various parcels of land are controlled by a large variety of individual organized groups, rather than that entire half of the world being fully organized together.   Expectedly, this only gets worse in the chaotic lands, which are extremely fragmented. Many think these lands are far more dangerous, and in some areas they certainly are, though many of the chaotic forces there are happy to coexist with each others and visitors as long as their freedom isn't threatened.
