Common Etiquette rules

Greetings: A slight bow with the right hand over the heart is customary. For close friends, a brief touch of foreheads is a sign of affection.
Public Conduct: Speaking softly and acting with composure are hallmarks of Shavian manners. Public displays of anger or excessive emotion are frowned upon.
Dining: Meals are a time for quiet reflection and bonding; interrupting a host or wasting food is seen as disrespectful.
Seafaring Etiquette: On ships, the captain is always addressed with their full title, and entering a vessel without permission is a grave offense.

Art & Architecture

Art: Shavian art focuses on balance and harmony, often incorporating flowing lines, oceanic themes, and natural materials like coral, shells, and wood. Painted murals depicting maritime life, legends, and celestial maps are common in public spaces.
Architecture: Buildings blend seamlessly with their environment, using stone and timber for durability and beauty. Roofs often curve upward, resembling waves or sails. Coastal towns feature lighthouses and watchtowers, while inland villages have communal courtyards and temples.

Foods & Cuisine

Shavian cuisine is shaped by the sea and the fertile lands of the islands:

Staples: Fish, rice, yams, and tropical fruits like citrus, coconuts, and bananas.
  Signature Dishes:

Tidefire Stew: A spicy fish and coconut milk soup.
Sunfruit Cakes: Sweet pastries made with dried fruits and honey.
Reef Salad: A mix of seaweed, shellfish, and herbs dressed in citrus juice.
Beverages: Herbal teas, fermented fruit drinks, and a popular seaweed-infused ale.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Day of the Stars: A night of stargazing and storytelling, celebrating celestial knowledge.
Harvest of the Pearl: A celebration in The Drops where divers present their finest pearls to the Queen.
Ritual Naming: A child’s name is formally presented during a family gathering, accompanied by blessings from elders.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Newborns are introduced to their family and community through the Blessing of the Waters, where the child is gently dipped in seawater or a freshwater spring. This act symbolizes the child’s connection to both life and the ocean. A ceremonial necklace made from local materials is gifted to the child and worn for protection.

Coming of Age Rites

At the age of 16, Shavian youths undergo the Trial of the Compass, where they must successfully navigate a symbolic or literal journey, often by sea or land. This rite tests their resourcefulness, knowledge, and maturity. Upon completion, they are given a personal token, such as a carved compass or an heirloom, signifying their readiness to contribute to society.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Shavians honor their dead through the Rites of the Final Tide:   The body is wrapped in a shroud made from natural materials and either cremated or buried at sea, depending on the family’s tradition.
A small stone inscribed with the deceased’s name is placed in an ancestral shrine.
The Ceremony of Echoes is held annually, where family members share stories of their ancestors to keep their memory alive.

Common Taboos

Harming the Sea: Polluting or disrespecting the ocean is considered a grievous offense.
Disregarding Elders: Ignoring the advice or teachings of elders is seen as shameful.
Breaking Promises: A broken oath is a stain on one’s honor and can lead to social ostracization.
Entering Sacred Spaces Unbidden: Temples, ancestral shrines, and ships are places of reverence and must be entered with permission.
