Rich Man's Foot

Transmission & Vectors

It is an accumulation of sediment in the blood in joints, brought on by overindulgence in food.

Thankfully, it isn't contagious, though there are certain groups of people prone to this.

Causes

As stated previously, it is more likely to happen from overindulging in food. Specifically, hard liquor, red meats, and lack of plant matter.

Strangely enough, overindulging in sweets doesn't cause this directly, though it causes another illness entirely.

Symptoms

Rich man's foot appears as a sharp pain in the big toe, or other large joints. Sometimes it is accompanied by lumps on joints and the passing of fine dust in urine.
Because of this, someone with rich's man foot can't walk or stand up for long. They would just have sharp pains in their feet if they tried.

Treatment

There is no sure fire cure for rich man's foot beyond attempting to change what the patient eats.

This is easier said than done, however, as the type of food on one's table is considered an indicator of status.

Most patients who are told to reduce their meats and beer refuse to do so because they don't want to be made fun of for being unmanly or improper.

Prognosis

Rich man's foot is not fatal, but annoying, so long as dietary care is attempted regardless of social pressure.

If left alone too long however, the patient may not even want to try walking again.

Affected Groups

People who catch rich man's foot tend to be above forty years old, with excessive consumption of rich food and little physical activity.

As such, it's much less common among pirates and laborers in the Pits despite their ability to enjoy rich food without worrying about status laws.

This illness was known since antiquity, from the Greco-Roman days.
