Milestone

After three weeks at sea, the town of Milestone is a welcome return civilization. That is, until you get to know its residents!
— Metthos

It's the middle of the morning as all goods & passengers recently disembarked form the Mermaid's Grace make their way up the hill. As they crest it, they immediately see Milestone. A town that is young enough to still look like it was constructed from nearby materials. A large area was cleared of trees, the wood used to construct and the now clear ground used to farm and ranch. From the top of the hill it is possible to see the entire town, it can't have more than 30 structures all built around three larger buildings. One of them is flying a flag, another is obviously a temple of some sort.
Beyond the town, beyond the farmland, there is a forest. A thick canopy makes the whole earth seem completely green all the way to the horizon, where the clouds gather around the vague outline of a monumental mountain range. A relieved murmur spreads through the group of passenger. There, fifteen minutes' walk away, lies a meal, a bath, and a new life.

Demographics

Though initially built by humans and halflings, the town of Milestone has as diverse a population as you'll every see. In fact, you are more likely to see more members of lesser known races in Milestone than in any other place in the world. Everyone has come to Milestone to start their new life.   As the town is self made, so are its wealthier people. Though some may have arrived with a bigger purse than others, that purse more often than not turned out to be useless without a hardy attitude and strict work ethic to back it up. Even traditionally more gentle professionals like clerks, milliners and maid have had cause to split a log -or a skull, from time to time.

Government

Milestone models its government on that of the old world, though at a much smaller scale. There are Mayoral elections every five years, and the current Mayor Cassius Bell is coming to the end of his second term. The Mayor sit at the head of the town council, a small group of residents who represent the larger population. Every member of the council has the right to call a town vote on any major decision that needs to be made. This vote is carried out by literally dividing the town square in two, and picking a side. People who don't show up to vote are commonly dismissed when criticising the results afterwards.
