Darkwell was founded by The Darkwell Society.

Darkwell was founded by The Darkwell Society. In 1823 the location of Darkwell, and the surrounding coastal area, has an abnormal amount of otherworldly energy. The colonization was to drive the cultists that had flocked to this area to bring alien nightmarish things to rule over the world. As the town grew, the threat of cultists diminished and it became easier for The Darkwell Society to find and eliminate paranormal threats before it reached the general public's knowledge. The Darkwell Society became a secret themselves. Hiding in plain sight, they are now known as the Darkwell Detective Agency.
