Guild of Mechanics

A Guild that originated in Diewolsca and has risen to some prominence with the advent of Goblin Refugees leaving the Old Orcish Empire. A Guild of Craftsmen, specifically in the field of Mechanical Engineering, they provide a guarantee of Education, Safety and Fair Trade among their members that many merchants and military contractors find reassuring.

Structure

The Guild itself consists of a number of Guild Members and Apprentices. Some Guild Members take on additional duties such as the management of Guild property, procurement of materials, negotiating of large scale contracts, and overseeing membership applications and examinations. These latter members are often referred to as Guild Representatives rather than just 'Members', but they will usually have their own individual titles.
Many who are intrigued by the art of Mechanical Engineering are recruited by the Guild as Apprentices, and they will spend several years training underneath one or more Guild Members to learn various skills, before earning a full membership for themselves. The final exam to become a full member is to craft a unique item. It does not have to necessarily be practical or efficient, but it must have a unique element to prove that the prospective member can further the understanding of the Guild.
Rarely, a particularly talented individual who already shows the necessary skills and has several inventions already to their name, will be recruited as a full member with no Apprenticeship required. The rare talent of the Artificer is particularly valuable to the Guild, and there is rumoured to be a generous 'finder's fee' for any member who can successfully recruit an Artificer. This is tempered by the fact there are some within the Guild of Mechanics who are outspoken against the weaving of magic with technology, and feel that Mechanical devices that involve no magic or enchantment are both 'purer' in design and more reliable. Nevertheless, many within the guild will happily take advantage of the properties of enchanted materials and items, and applaud the inventiveness of Artificers for blending the two disciplines seamlessly.

History

The Guild of Mechanics formed about 50 years ago, as the other Nations began to take notice of the craftsmanship of Goblin Mechanics in the Old Orcish Empire and wanted to take steps to improve their own technology. While many inventors want to remain individual tinkerers, there were also many who saw the value of pooling resources, and the negotiating power of forming a Guild to deal with larger and more lucrative work orders.
The Guild had its origins in Diewolsca, like so many Guilds, but in a short time there were Mechanics in every Nation who pledged themselves to the Guild. There was even a growing number of Goblins in the Orcish Empire who had seen the benefit of the Guild and joined, albeit in a limited capacity due to being unable or unwilling to share certain secrets, such as the recipe for Goblin Powder.
When the Old Orcish Empire fell into its savage curse, many Goblins used their connections within the Guild to arrange their safe exodus from the Nation and secure new homes for their families. With the unaffiliated Goblin refugees spreading to the other Nations, the Guild was able to increase its membership and collective knowledge significantly.
